Book review: VISIONS & SHADOWS, by Michelle Heard

I love Michelle Heard’s mafia love stories, and now she has changed to Romantasy.  Even though I understand the need to try out a new genre, I will truly miss her wonderful mafia stories.  This one was entertaining, full of wonderful characters, both the good ones and the bad ones, and it had a feel of young people, full of courage and spunk, even though they are immortals.

Alchera was sent from the realm of Vaalbara into Earth so she could relate to the people there, and was brought back to Vaalbara five years later.  She has a quest to fulfill, save ten chosen earth habitants before earth is destroyed.  However, Alchera has no warrior training, her foes are mightier than she is, and she’s full of anger and betrayal because she was thrown into a new world where she spent five years feeling lost and lonely, then thrust back home where she doesn’t remember her family very well and they grew up apart from each other.  So she has attitude problems and resists Raighne’s guardian efforts.

Raighne is supposed to read her thoughts, feel her feelings, and heal her emotionally and physically, but has a hard time connecting with her because she keeps blocking him.  And all this time, they are battling visions, the bad people of Vaalbara, Adeth and Ares, avoiding falling into the Void, and convincing their chosen ones to come with them.  It’s like an adventure quest, with fighting, running, shifting and shimmering, magic potions, and quests to fulfill. 

I didn’t find it as riveting as my beloved mafia stories, but did get invested in the rescue of the humans as the earth succumbs to tsunamis, earthquakes, fires, and all kinds of mayhem.  There are many moments of heroism and many sad losses.  The series continues with other characters from Vaalbara as they find their place in this new world.
