Book review: FIRST VERSE, by L.M. Halloran

A Perfect Song Duet #1

Wilder & Evangeline

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This author is the queen of angst and I am a willing subject.  I love how she shreds my heart, how she makes her characters so perfectly adorable and broken, and their story so compelling.

Wilder and Evangeline are the children of the Breaking Giants rock band; Evangeline is Matt Sullivan’s daughter, Wilder is Julian Ashburn’s son.  Like their fathers, they’re insanely talented and have been making music since children.  They had their own band when they were teenagers, and right after high school, Wilder debuted in the high stakes world with his band Night Theory, and with Evangeline doing keyboards and harmonizing with his voice.  They were magical together but inside, they were broken.

I truly loved this story, stopped many times because I didn’t want it to end.  I was completely captivated by both characters and also saw that they were poison to each other.  Wilder was obsessed with Evangeline and not in a healthy way, and Evangeline was constantly hurt by Wilder’s selfish wants.  I saw the love, the need, their co-dependency, loved how they harmonized together, like they were soulmates, but they feel unfinished, like they were not ready for each other.  Both needed to grow up, to learn to love themselves first before they could love unselfishly and wholeheartedly.  It was such a beautiful story, full of love and yearning, and I even loved that it ended in a cliffhanger because I understand that they needed a little more growing individually before being together.  Now I can’t wait for the next book and read what it brings!

Book review: SPEAK OF THE DEVIL, by S.L. Scott

He’s a rockstar, she’s a nurse; he loves chaos, she loves order; he was attracted to her when they were in high school, she had a huge crush on him.  Ten years after they graduated high school and a “what-if” moment, they meet again because, gasp! they’re married and didn’t know it.  Their reunion was crazy and they started to work it out. And we got a beautiful love story!

The pace of the story is slow but I loved it because I was relishing and enjoying every moment with these two.  Shane had always had a thing for Cate but didn’t have the guts to act on it way back in high school so this was his chance.  I loved that Cate wanted him and treated him like a regular person, not a rockstar.  I liked that she was a very centered person who worked hard during high school and college to get where she was, a geriatric nurse, who loves her work and loves her patients.  One of her patients, Maggie, is a hoot and gave great comic relief to the story.

I was as intrigued as them as to how they got married, so I followed each page feverishly.  I enjoyed the story, love how Cate learned to enjoy a little bit of chaos and Shane gave a try to plans and order.  The love that grew between them was a beautiful thing to see, it was so hard and true.  Especially Shane who had enjoyed quite the rockstar life.  I loved how much he tried to protect her from paparazzi’s and the sleazy part of the press, and how accepting Cate was of what being with Shane entailed.  It was not a thrilling read, but more of a Sunday enjoyable read, and I loved every minute.  It was just the respite I needed after a turbulent couple of weeks and this was the best medicine.  Can’t wait for more from this author!
