Book review: MIDNIGHT BETWEEN US, by Claudia Burgoa

Timberbridge Brothers #4

Kier & Simone

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Intense, emotional, and angsty, just how I like my books!  I devoured this book, then re-read slowly to enjoy and savor the angst.  This author enjoys wrenching my heart and putting it together again, and I love it!

I never thought Simone and Keir would ever get their HEA because they were so broken.  They both used the same strategy to deal with their issues: keep people apart, live alone, bury the pain deep inside so it doesn’t come out and unravel.  Except the love they had for each other, which they had buried deep and wanted to ignore, still existed and was too strong to resist.

I loved how the author structured this story.  It has reminiscences from a stormy past, for both Simone and Keir.  Keir comes from the Timberbridge brothers, who had such a crappy home life, full of violence, hatred, and abuse.  Since Keir was one of the oldest brothers, he took a lot of the abuse to protect his little brothers, so he has a lot of issues and dysfunctions to deal with.  Instead of giving us instant redemption and reconciliation, the author took the characters through tribulations and more heartache.   There is a part that was so emotional that I felt like my chest was going to crack open.

Simone is the product of a teenage pregnancy, and what is worse, her grandfather is the town’s preacher.  She had to live with her mother’s bad reputation and her grandparents abuse of her mother, who finally left, and the strict, loveless household she was forced to live in.  They were each other’s comfort until Keir up and left without a goodbye, until he appears almost dead and tied up, in the trunk of a car.

There’s a feeling of menace, as Keir stays hidden from the Hollow Syndicate, the ones who beat him up and left for dead.  Simone was assigned to patch him up and keep him alive.  Then to keep him at her house which is like a fortress.  Imagine all the feelings and chemistry and guilt floating around for Keir, who abandoned Simone twenty years ago.  There’s resentment and pain on her part, guilt and repentance on his.  It’s all yummy angst!

Another thing I loved was seeing Atlas, oozing marital happiness and even giving out advice!  And then I understood that the older Timberbridge brothers, Malerick and Keir, are the most broken because they got the brunt of the abuse, and luckily their books were left for last, so the best was left for last, yay.  I have my suspicions about Malerick, let’s see if they turn out to be true.  Now I can’t wait for the final book, Malerick’s, and see how it’s all resolved.

Book review: PENN, by Sawyer Bennett

Pittsburg Titans #17

Penn & Mila

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was so looking forward to Penn Navarro’s story and the author didn’t disappoint!  He’s the best hockey player in the league, so getting him to play for the Titans was a major win.  However, he’s a jerk and a loner and it’s pretty apparent he has a huge chip on his shoulder. He rejects any friendly advance and keeps to himself.  The guys are frustrated because it affects their synergy, but leave him alone.

When a woman from his past appears, he rejects her calls for help until she convinces him of the gravity of the situation. Remembering how she was the only one on his side when a scandal broke out years ago, he agrees to help her, and thus causes a series of events to happen, not the least of which is that their chemistry goes nuclear.

I loved this story and loved Penn and Milla together.  Milla was brave in the past and is brave now, but totally fears for her safety.  Her story is sad, rejected by her parents and by Penn when she needed them most.  Penn is successful and rich, but very much alone.

I loved seeing Milla shake Penn out of his bubble, make him open up and eventually realize that not all teammates are as treacherous as the ones of his youth.  I loved seeing all the Titans party together, the wives supporting Milla, and the guys supporting their teammate in his time of trouble.

There’s a low thrum of suspense because there is someone who wants to harm Milla.  Penn thinks they need help and protection, so Jameson Force is brought in!  Now I got to see old friends from this series!  I love it when authors do crossovers and lets us see previous characters and how they are living their life.

The story has all the feels, love, fear, sex, friendship, suspense, and keeps you going on to find how it’s all resolved.  And what I love most of all? Penn’s opening up, to friends and to love.  It was everything I wanted and more!

Book review: FIRST VERSE, by L.M. Halloran

A Perfect Song Duet #1

Wilder & Evangeline

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This author is the queen of angst and I am a willing subject.  I love how she shreds my heart, how she makes her characters so perfectly adorable and broken, and their story so compelling.

Wilder and Evangeline are the children of the Breaking Giants rock band; Evangeline is Matt Sullivan’s daughter, Wilder is Julian Ashburn’s son.  Like their fathers, they’re insanely talented and have been making music since children.  They had their own band when they were teenagers, and right after high school, Wilder debuted in the high stakes world with his band Night Theory, and with Evangeline doing keyboards and harmonizing with his voice.  They were magical together but inside, they were broken.

I truly loved this story, stopped many times because I didn’t want it to end.  I was completely captivated by both characters and also saw that they were poison to each other.  Wilder was obsessed with Evangeline and not in a healthy way, and Evangeline was constantly hurt by Wilder’s selfish wants.  I saw the love, the need, their co-dependency, loved how they harmonized together, like they were soulmates, but they feel unfinished, like they were not ready for each other.  Both needed to grow up, to learn to love themselves first before they could love unselfishly and wholeheartedly.  It was such a beautiful story, full of love and yearning, and I even loved that it ended in a cliffhanger because I understand that they needed a little more growing individually before being together.  Now I can’t wait for the next book and read what it brings!

Book review: ALONE WITH YOU, by Aly Martinez

I knew I was in for an angsty read as soon as I started the book, plus the author is known for her heart wrenching stories.  Gwen is looking for something to give her purpose after her divorce from narcissistic Jeff, so she bought a diner and plans to change it to a cafe. But her plans interfere with Truett West’s Wednesdays routine of spending one hour with a club sandwich he won’t eat. As soon as we meet Truett, we learn two things: he and Gwen have history, and Truett is victim to mental health.

Truett and Gwen had more tragedy than anyone deserves, and both are suffering for it.  Truett lives in a jail of guilt, imprisoned in a house where he was once happy, punishing himself for failing the people he loves.  It’s a self imposed asylum from life and love and it’s going on for eighteen years. Likewise, Gwen endured a ten-year marriage to a narcissist, the only gain she got is her adored son Nate.

When Gwen sees Truett for the first time in over a decade, two things come clear to her, they still have chemistry, and he’s the one love that got away.

Their story is very bumpy and very heart wrenching.  This is a man possessed by guilt, and only Gwen gives him peace.  She gives him kindness when she sees he’s a wreck, and when he starts to come out of his solitary shell, he begins to realize it was self imposed and not truly deserved.  His fight for mental clarity, for happiness once again, is very hard to read.  His love for the woman he lost twenty years ago is formidable and makes him move mountains of the emotional kind.

When you start this author’s books, you go in blind. As you read, she starts giving out pebbles of information, and this process goes on until the end, when you get the complete picture.  Nothing is as it seems, and there are plot twists that leave you with your mouth hanging open.  It’s a thrilling ride, as well as an emotional ride.  I already know her style so I dive in blind and expected the roller coaster ride, and she never disappoints.  There are moments of levity with her friend Lucille who helps with the diner reconstruction and turns into a bestie with her mischievous son Nate.

Prepare to have your heart broken, keep tissues handy!

About the author

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

Book review: THE DARK BEFORE LIGHT, by L.M. Halloran

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
And to think that I almost didn’t get the book!  The BDSM trope didn’t appeal, but the blurb of the book was so intriguing that I decided to go for it, and it turned out to be one of my 2024 favorites!

Kieran and Talia met when she was 14 and he was 18 years old.  They met in a Dublin cemetery, she was drunk, he was smoking a joint.  Talia was touring with her family, her sister took her to a pub, gave her two shots, left her, the owners threw her out and she ended up drunk in the cemetery.  Kieran found her, talked to her, and took her back to her hotel.  Not without first telling her she needed to be the queen of lions, and he would be the king. She would be ok and people would kneel at her.  She’s now 31, a psychiatrist, and an old college roommate asked her to take in a new patient.  When she finds out it’s Kieran, she makes room for him.

And this is how this fantastic story begins and took me on a journey of nanotechnology, assassination attempts, a psychiatrist who is also a sex therapist, she used to work as a dominatrix, and he used to feel guilty over losing his wife and turning into a player.  The author’s writing is sophisticated and witty, the characters are complicated and so interesting.  I loved all the psychology involved in their interactions and psyches, loved the slow burn of their attraction and the ethics involved as their attraction evolves and Talia can’t manage to separate feelings and professional actions.

This story felt like a psychological thriller, not so much from the plot against Kieran for his nanorobotics research, but from the thrills I felt at all the psychological interactions between Kieran and Talia, and Talia’s consulting with her fellow therapist Leo Chastain.  I love anything psychological, and paired with love, sex, and the bit of BDSM involved, it felt like a dream love story. There’s also real suspense, industrial espionage, bodyguards who protect with their lives on the line, attempts at their safety, nail biting, and girl gossip.  I loved that the author inserted several humorous scenes because otherwise it would have been hugely intense, I needed the relief of some laughs!

This book needs to be enjoyed page by page, every dialogue, every interaction, all their thoughts and all their feelings.  It was an intense ride and so very enjoyable, I totally recommend it!
