Book review: THE LAST CALL HOME, by Blaudia Burgoa

Timberbridge Boys #5

Malerick & Delilah & Cassian

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The single most important emotion I felt throughout this book is “want”.  Cassian arrives at Birchwood Springs, buys a bar, and prepares to settle for some time on his assignation.  The CSQ, who are working on taking down the Hollow Syndicate, want him there to help on the operation.  He didn’t know that Malerick was in town, also on assignment with the FBI, posing as the town sheriff, and with the same purpose.  When Cass arrives at Delilah’s coffee shop, finds Mal there, there’s a complete scene all full of emotions, want, lust, longing, guilt, resentment, and a very heavy sexual tension, very little words.  That scene was intense!

What came out of that scene and other meet ups, is that Mal and Cass used to work together in the FBI, had a relation that blew up disastrously and left them both full of many regrets and broken feelings.  There’s a sense of wanting to belong, wanting love and family, and wanting to be home. As their work progresses, so does the courtship between Delilah, Malerick, and Cassian, all abetted and supported by Rosalinda, Delilah’s mother. She’s anxious to find a spouse for her daughter, wants grandkids.  She’s a force to be reckoned in this town; even Cassian, experienced operator that he is, is scared of her.

There’s suspense and there’s sex, in equal amounts.  There’s a lot of tension, as Delilah makes her demands and waits for her men to deliver: the truth or nothing.  It’s very interesting that Atlas and Keir’s stories happen during the course of this book, so this one takes several months to happen.  There seems to be a lot of waiting, and a lot of playing for our throuple.  They wanted each other, and they were doing the work, lead by Delilah.

I loved to see them coming home to each other, was biting my nails in the final part of the book where things were coming to a conclusion in unexpected ways.  There’s surprises in the book, very intriguing.  I actually wanted more of the three as they settle into domestic bliss, so sorry to see them all go.

Book review: WHEN LOVE FOUND US, by Claudia Burgoa

Timberbridge Brothers # 3

Atlas & Blythe

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Instead of calling this book a page turner, I should call it a nail biter, because it had me on the edge of the seat, anxious as I read about the menace of an abusive husband in search of the wife who escaped his clutches.

The book starts with a chilling escape scene, then goes into the moment where Blythe meets Atlas and connects with his ice-cold blue eyes, and I was done for.  I was incredibly curious about Atlas since the other Timberbridge brothers hate him so much, and it all comes clear in this book.  He’s not just a tattoo artist, he’s so much more.  A brooding artist who hides a tender heart, who wants to protect and save people who are in situations like he was as a child, powerless and without protection.

When he meets Blythe, the same protection instinct comes to life, except this time there’s also chemistry and an intense sense of wanting.  It’s a yummy story and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Atlas deep down inside.  Blythe initially irritated with her stubbornness that came out of self-preservation, but once she accepted that this small town was special, she accepted the help.

I liked that there’s a potential danger to the town, known by the sheriff, unknown to the residents, and this issue is used as a common theme in the series, and it’s this issue that is bringing the brothers together, in agreement or disagreement.  And of course, the power of women, as in, the partners of the Timberbridge brothers who are the ones forcing the reunion, as they themselves are forming such a strong group of supporting women.

There’s a strong thrum of suspense through the book, like a waiting in suspense feeling, and a great pace that made the book such a page turner.  I enjoyed this book a lot, especially seeing Atlas and Blythe finally getting to stop running, stay, and just be.  Finally finding a home with each other.  Great story!

Book review: LOVE ME GENTLY, by Stacey Lynn

Deer Creek #1

Cole & Trina

⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

Reading this book was exhausting!  Due to the author’s excellent writing, I followed Trina during her break up with Cole, her hard efforts to find modeling opportunities in New York, her fall from grace, and the utter ghastliness of her married life.

Once she’s rescued from that life, it’s an upward climb towards mental health, and again, the author takes us on that bumpy ride too.  Stacey Lynn gave us such a clear portrayal of what it feels like to loose all your self-respect and love, to feel like trash and not worth saving.  And that incredible selfless love that Cole shows is the best medicine for a broken heart.

The book is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time, and it needs to be read without me describing all the details, just go in there and have a good cry fest.  It’s beautiful and heartbreaking and a wonderful redemption story.

Book review: HERE AND NOW, by Corinne Michaels

Ember Falls #2

Miles & Penelope

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was cute and sweet all the way through.  Penelope and her son Kai are on the run from a danger in their past, they’ve been in Amber Falls for a few weeks, enough for Miles Anderson to meet Penelope and fall for her like a ton of bricks.  It was cute to see all the shenanigans he invented to meet with her and gain territory in the fight for her heart.  Penelope is wary and defensive, she’s on the run, she doesn’t want to get involved but Miles is so cute (and hot!), such a decent person, he’s hard to resist.

It was cute to see Miles visiting Prose and Perk, where Penelope works as a barista, and order coffee, which he hates, and act like he’s drinking and enjoying (inward shudder!).

He’s cute, he’s persistent, he’s canny and irresistible as he embroils Penelope into “accidental” dates.  Penelope resists but who can withstand being the focus of such a dedicated courting, from such a determined suitor.

There’s a low thrum of suspense because we don’t know when Penelope’s endangered past will come to visit, so we’re on the lookout.  Miles is decided and protective. And we’re spellbound reading.  I had credibility problems on some of the action but enjoyed the suspense.  In the end, a highly entertaining story!

Book review: THE DARK BEFORE LIGHT, by L.M. Halloran

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
And to think that I almost didn’t get the book!  The BDSM trope didn’t appeal, but the blurb of the book was so intriguing that I decided to go for it, and it turned out to be one of my 2024 favorites!

Kieran and Talia met when she was 14 and he was 18 years old.  They met in a Dublin cemetery, she was drunk, he was smoking a joint.  Talia was touring with her family, her sister took her to a pub, gave her two shots, left her, the owners threw her out and she ended up drunk in the cemetery.  Kieran found her, talked to her, and took her back to her hotel.  Not without first telling her she needed to be the queen of lions, and he would be the king. She would be ok and people would kneel at her.  She’s now 31, a psychiatrist, and an old college roommate asked her to take in a new patient.  When she finds out it’s Kieran, she makes room for him.

And this is how this fantastic story begins and took me on a journey of nanotechnology, assassination attempts, a psychiatrist who is also a sex therapist, she used to work as a dominatrix, and he used to feel guilty over losing his wife and turning into a player.  The author’s writing is sophisticated and witty, the characters are complicated and so interesting.  I loved all the psychology involved in their interactions and psyches, loved the slow burn of their attraction and the ethics involved as their attraction evolves and Talia can’t manage to separate feelings and professional actions.

This story felt like a psychological thriller, not so much from the plot against Kieran for his nanorobotics research, but from the thrills I felt at all the psychological interactions between Kieran and Talia, and Talia’s consulting with her fellow therapist Leo Chastain.  I love anything psychological, and paired with love, sex, and the bit of BDSM involved, it felt like a dream love story. There’s also real suspense, industrial espionage, bodyguards who protect with their lives on the line, attempts at their safety, nail biting, and girl gossip.  I loved that the author inserted several humorous scenes because otherwise it would have been hugely intense, I needed the relief of some laughs!

This book needs to be enjoyed page by page, every dialogue, every interaction, all their thoughts and all their feelings.  It was an intense ride and so very enjoyable, I totally recommend it!
