Book review: UNDENIABLY UNEXPECTED, by J. Saman

Boston’s Irresistible Billionaires #6

Keegan & Loomis

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another charming love story about this wonderful Fritz family!  By this time they feel like an extended family!  Keegan is the quintessential Fritz princess, lovely, generous, conscious of her standing as a Fritz, careful of her reputation, knowing the press follows her around.  In spite of her wealth she is not at all entitled, but rather responsible and work oriented.  She has a secret that she’s keeping from most of her family, and through the book she’s struggling on how to come clean: she’s a romance author apart from being a ob/gyn resident.

I loved Loomis in this book! He’s specially vulnerable because he has a son who was delivered on his mother’s doorstep. He has no information at all about his birth or his mother, so he’s feeling insecure, afraid his little boy will be snatched away.  He’s incredibly grateful for the help and support that Keegan, Tinsley, and Vander give him.

The story is so sweet as we see Loomis taking care of Fenric, cooking for Keegan, being protective of both, grateful for the help, and being a good friend all around.  He’s keeping his attraction in check because he doesn’t feel worthy of a Fritz princess but Keegan disabuses him of the notion.  And once they start, does it turn hot 🔥!

The story has steam, lots of loving, a precious little boy, friends who help, a villain who is following them and publishing compromising photos, the suspense about little Fenric.  All of it kept me riveted to the action, to see when Loomis would succumb to Keegan’s wiles, and what about Fenric comes up.  Great story, great entertainment, great characters!

REEVE, by Siobhan Davis

All of Me #4

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was everything I didn’t know I needed!  I was apprehensive because I knew what was going to happen, but I wasn’t prepared to have my heart wrenched with sadness and compassion for Reeve.  I wasn’t happy with him after reading the first books, I kept thinking that he was wrong and selfish, but reading this book, I realized, he’s a kid!! He lost his way and didn’t know how to find it again, mostly because he didn’t have a father who showed him the way.  He wanted to prove himself to everyone and sadly, made mistake after mistake.  He loved Vivien so hard, so constantly, she was his reason for living, and reading his story broke my heart!

I loved reading his side of the story because now I can love Reeve like I didn’t love him the first time around.  I feel total empathy for both him and Vivien.  They were victims of circumstances and unscrupulous persons around them.  I’m so grateful to the author for writing this story and giving me another aspect of this beautiful and angsty love story.  Whereas before I felt anger at Reeves for being manipulative, now all I feel is love and compassion for this little boy who only wanted to be loved. Have tissues and be prepared to cry your eyes out!

BEFORE THE SUNSET, by Laura Pavlov

Cottonwood Cove #4

Finn & Reese

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Friends to lovers done right!  Finn and Reese have been best friends all their lives, have great memories of their adventures together since childhood.  They have always been together, sharing holidays, sharing family time.  When Reese got cancer, Finn was the one present for all her chemo treatments.  He was always there for her.  They actually made a decision early on, never to cross the line to romance so they wouldn’t ruin their friendship.

Reese was just finishing a year in London, working under a famous designer, improving her craft, when she learned that her ex-fiancee, who dumped her when she moved to London, has a new girlfriend.  Finn is being targeted by his co-star in the TV series that shot him to fame.  His co-star is spreading false rumors that they are a couple.  So when Reese arrives back home, they devise a fake relation to help each other.  And of course, make-believe starts to turn into reality!

What I loved about this story is the devotion Reese and Finn have for each other.  It really felt like love from the start.  The fact that they wanted different things, Reese wanted marriage and kids, Finn wanted fame and have a good time playing the field, it kept them apart from acting on their feelings.  I sensed that Finn was more ready than Reese to be a couple, but Reese turned to be stubborn on her denials.  She got quite tiresome in defending her douche ex.  I really couldn’t understand why she wanted to save her relation when she had a much better man on her side.

Family time is very strong in this author’s stories, so we get a lot of sibling interaction, mostly through their group chat, which is hilarious.  There is a closet scene with all the siblings and a very pregnant Dylan ( cousin from Honey Mountain series), which is laugh out loud funny.  The author did a great job of mixing small town vibes, family love, tender and sexy, a wonderful man and a stubborn woman and made a great love story that delights and swoons.

Book review: BITTERSWEET, by Carrie Aarons

Ashton Family #1

Patrick & Cassandra

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cassandra Mauer returns to Hope Crest after her father’s death to take care of his estate.  There’s not much, a small insurance and his downtrodden house which needs fixing before it can be sold.  When she arrives back in town, she feels a connection to this quiet place.  Years ago, she felt like this could be home, but the few months she lived here when she was in high school, she fell victim to bullying, so she left to live with her mother.

Her father was an embittered, angry man who hated on almost everybody in town.  He didn’t hesitate to criticize and vilify anyone who stepped in front of him, and so everyone in town hated him back.  This hate fell on Cass too and didn’t let her be a regular towny.

She went on to Hollywood, turned into an A-lister actress and had ten years of success.  But now, her heart is not in it, and this town pulls her in more than ever.  Her biggest obstacle is the Ashton family, who believe she should sell the land the house sits on to them.  They’ve considered her father an interloper and their #1 enemy.

As Cassandra deals with the renovation of her father’s house by herself, she uses the time to ponder on her career and her choices.  She’s tired of the Hollywood life, the anxiety of the promotion tours.  Her attraction to Patrick Ashton, her high school crush, flourishes again, but there’s the obstacle of the family’s enmity.

This is typical small town romance, the gossip train, old family feuds, different women competing for the few available bachelors in town.  It’s cute and sweet.  Cassandra surprises everyone with her sweetness and friendliness, she’s open to help everyone who needs it, often showing surprising generousness to the town and residents.

Patrick Ashton has been engaged three times and cancelled before the wedding, always feeling that there was something lacking.  Think Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts! However, everything clicks with Cassandra except the hate her family feels for her.  His father wants him to seduce her into selling them her land, he acts like a wimp, not defending her to her detractors in his family and town.  I felt he lacked some guts in facing everyone who maligned her.  At least, he was upfront about his failings and later manned up!

I didn’t love Patrick but I did love Cassandra and enjoyed the typical small town shenanigans.  There was some suspense from a stalker that added interest to the story.

  • Small town romance
  • Celebrity / small town
  • Enemies to lovers

Book review: BAD BOY BRODY, by TIJAN

OMG, this book is as fantastic as the other Tijan books! It sucked me into the story right from the beginning and kept me rapt all the way through, as in I read it in one day.  What an incredible story, what incredible characters!

I love Hollywood stories, so I loved that the male character is an A-lister, especially now when he fell a little from grace.  He was in his first important movie premiere when he listened on the phone as his brother crashed and died and that turned his world sideways.  He went crazy, drinking, whoring and fighting and his golden light turned a little tawdry, earning him the nickname Bad Boy Brody.  Now he’s in Montana, about to start a movie, not his first choice, but a condition in order to make the film he really wants to make.

I love the coincidence that he’s forced to be in Montana, forced to be in this movie, and his life is about to take a significant turn in his life!  On the way to the house where the movie takes place, they’re surprised with a herd run of wild mustangs, and perched among one of them is this woman who feels as one with the horse, no saddle and no bridle, impressive and memorable.  Days later, he meets the woman in one of his walks around the property and his future and his heart are taken prisoner!

I loved Brody, he takes his craft seriously, he memorizes his lines before he starts a movie, always on time, always professional.  He’s now drinking a lot, he’s a little scattered but he’s no less professional.  He’s having a hard time, reliving the memory of the phone call as his brother crashed.  But if he was a memorable character, Morgan takes the throne on mystic and wonderful female characters.  Abandoned by her stepfather and siblings when her mother was killed, she was raised by nannies but more importantly, she was taken in by one of the mustangs, Shoal.  And when Shoal had a foal, Shiloh, she turned into her sister.  They had an uncanny connection and when they ran, it was as if they were one soul and one mind.  She was not completely of the human race, she turned off her humanity after her mother was murdered and she felt more confident among the herd, following the stallion and Shoal, riding on Shiloh.  It felt truly mystic!

This love story was utterly delightful.  Morgan brings a lot of wisdom from being so connected to the animals and nature.  She awed Brody with her straightforwardness and beauty and some of that mystical feeling she brings.  There were several moments when I cried, like when her step-siblings arrive on the scene and see her for the first time in years.  To see a man, Finn, cry because he sees who he considers his baby sister was truly heartbreaking and heartwarming.  Same for his twin sister, Abby.  Initially I thought they didn’t have good intentions but in that scene, I was sure there was only love.

I loved the way Brody brought Morgan from the land of the herd into humanity, little by little, cemented in the strong relation they were developing.  I loved how Brody furiously defended her against everyone who wanted to exploit her.  He was always on her side, no compromises.  And in being so strongly defended, so strongly loved, she made her way, step by step, back into the world of the humans, but she was an improved version, because she had the wisdom of her foster family, Shoal and Shiloh.

Just when you think you’ve read all the good Tijan books, you find an older book and it hits you in your face, that she’s been this incredibly wonderful story teller long before I chanced on her books.  Absolutely wonderful!
