Book review: DOUBLE PLAY, by L.B. Dunbar

I’m loving this author’s stories about silver foxes! She presents men who have lived some, have a lot of experiences under their belt, regrets and successes, and know what they want.

In this case, Declan and India have always pined for each other but had a lot of near misses, never able to start a relation because they were in different places in their work and personal circumstances. Now, fifteen years after they had a one-week fling, which was way more than a fling and with a potential of something serious, they have a possible second chance.

“I moved. India moved. I had Montgomery. India married Malakai. She went to Vegas. I landed in Nashville. Our history was like one of those maps baseball teams project on the big screen to highlight the crazy path of a player’s journey through the league.”

The story is rife with emotion, regrets, yearning, lots of crackling chemistry and a ton of lust. They are perfect for each other but there are still obstacles. I loved how Declan always deferred to India’s career, understanding how important it is to her.

“India’s work isn’t just a job. It’s her career,” I stress. My hands land on my hips like I’m ready to physically guard India. “A job is something you do. But a career involves passion.” I glance from India to Montgomery. “Women like Indie are paving the way for girls like you. She’s the future.”

They have a constant game of truth or dare, which colors their interactions, and is brilliant in communicating their truths to each other. It’s fun and flirty and sexy. This was a page-turner, very entertaining. I was very invested in how Declan and India would turn out.

Book review: WORTH THE CHASE, by J. Sterling

Matthew O’Grady was a retired NHL professional player, he was also an O’Grady from Sugar Mountain, he didn’t have to chase women, they flocked to him.  Except for Isabella Sanchez, childhood friend and little sister of his best friend Joe.  She had a crush on him when she was fourteen, but she was just a kid, and Joe invoked bro code on her.  So he kissed her before he left for the NHL and didn’t contact her in the seven years he was away. Cue heartbreak!

Now Matthew is back in Sugar Mountain, retired early from hockey due to a knee injury, he wants Bella but she won’t give him a break.  He visits her at the bar where she’s a bartender, she won’t give him the time of day, he begs and begs until he finally convinces her to help him buy a house.

Since she has a realtor license she doesn’t use, she decides to help him out, they choose a house they both love, and he starts waxing poetic, trying to convince him to give him a chance.

Reading their story was fun, Matthew was so cute pouting and whining and finagling one date after another from Bella.  The interactions and text messages between brothers were cute, full of banter and good-natured insults.  I loved Bella, she held out and made Matthew suffer for his inattention until she needed him urgently and the guy really got present.  I love this series because it involves love and steam, but also the love of a small town, friends and family.  It’s lovely, sweet, cute and very heartwarming.

I’ve said it before and it bears repeating, Carly Phillips is my comfort writer. Perfect plot, perfect pace, wonderful character development, every plot line perfectly closed at the end of the story, her books are a joy to read.

I lost count of the Dares, there seem to be hundreds, so I just enjoyed the story and didn’t try to make sense of who was who.  I just read about a runaway bride, the ex-professional football player who rescued her and whisked her away to the Bahamas and enjoyed her honeymoon with her, as just friends.  Dex Sterling was the perfect white knight, taking care of his damsel in distress, perfectly considerate of her hurt betrayed feelings.  

Samantha Dare was the one who got away, when they met for the first time years ago, the one woman who enticed Dex like no other, but her big brother warned him away, and he was a rookie player who needed to be focused on football only.  Now? It’s time to play!

It was a fun and flirty romance, with just a touch of suspense, a touch of angst from the betrayal and complot, and a lot of fun from the hundreds of siblings and cousins and aunts and uncles.  Completely entertaining and heartwarming!

It started snarky and ended up so sweet!  Ava and Cameron have this frenemies relation where Cam acts like a jerk just to rile Ava up and then his eyes shine because he’s anticipating the squabble about to rise up between them.  Such has been their relation for the last eight years.  

It all started one night, right before Cameron was about to leave for Notre Dame University and his football scholarship.  He’d always liked Ava but she was his best friend’s little sister, and he was about to leave.  But she came to him and begged, so prettily and insistently, so they had a night.  He panicked after and pretended he was so drunk he didn’t remember, and gained her hate and contempt for that.  

Now Cam is back home in Denver, Ava is working in Denver and out of a three-year relationship, so she was ready to be wooed and that’s just what Cameron was decided to do.  

Their path to love was riddled with snark and squabbles but it seemed to be their love language.  They were equally sweet and sexy, and so very well compatible.  

This was a fun story, full of shenanigans and sexy times, but also some angst and a little darkness.  I loved Ava’s brother Isaiah, he was an easygoing goofball, and Cam’s family.  The Kelleys are a big, loud and close knit family, and I loved reading about their dinners full of banter and love.
