A heartfelt, emotional romance that packs a powerful punch.  I actually read it twice in a row, to savor and enjoy all the nuances. It’s not just a love story — it’s about two young people carrying heavy expectations on their shoulders, trying to build a future that feels almost impossible. The writing is warm and emotional, and the journey is full of those quiet, tender moments that make you stop and sigh.

Harper’s strength moved me. She carries so much, yet she never stops fighting for her future, for her little brother, for the tiny pieces of hope she refuses to let go of. There’s a softness in her that made me ache — that mix of determination and vulnerability that feels so human and so brave.

And Orion… he’s the kind of hero who sneaks up on you. Gentle, gifted, hurting in ways he doesn’t know how to name. He presents to others in such a cocky way, hiding a broken boy inside. And the only one who truly sees him is Harper. There’s something so emotional about watching someone who has spent years believing he’s “less than” slowly realize he’s extraordinary. The way he looks at Harper, the way he listens, the way he tries — it’s the kind of quiet devotion that makes your chest feel warm.

Their connection is magnetic from the start, but what makes it beautiful is how they see each other, how they choose each other. Not in grand gestures, but in small, intimate moments — honesty, comfort, encouragement, the kind of love that says “I see you” when the world feels too heavy. It’s emotional and so swoony!

What stayed with me most was how the story honors resilience. It’s about surviving what should have broken you, about finding your voice, about refusing to let circumstances define your worth.

By the end, I was completely in love with these characters and the world they built together. It’s a romance that doesn’t just entertain — it touches something deep and leaves you glowing.  It’s a story about love, yes, but also about courage, healing, and becoming the person you were meant to be. A truly wonderful read.

Book review: REVEALED, by Siobhan Davis

It starts slowly, the way it should when you’re stepping into a world that’s been shattered and rebuilt from dust. Earth is a graveyard in places—just dirt, ruins, and memories—and Ariana is in Clementia trying to find her footing. She’s reconnecting with Zane, making new friends, figuring out how to be useful to the resistance, and sensing that something in the shadows just isn’t right.

And then—around the 30% mark—the story slams the accelerator. Suddenly you’re on a wild, breathless roller coaster, getting emotional whiplash from twist after twist the author throws at you.

I kept getting flashes of Star Wars with the resistance and stealth warships, Terminator with the part‑human/part‑machine soldiers, and Transformers with drones sweeping the skies, hunting for traitors.

It’s a sci‑fi cocktail that somehow works beautifully.

And the love story—oh wow! There are surprises here I absolutely did not see coming.

The whole thing is exciting and exhilarating, but it’s also threaded with danger, tension, and moments of deep, aching sadness. The suspense never lets up. I stayed up until the wee hours because I simply couldn’t walk away.

Everything you thought couldn’t happen… happens. And then the book throws even more at you—twists you never imagined, reveals that hit like punches, and of course, a dramatic cliffhanger that made me want to scream.

I didn’t know what dystopian fiction really felt like, but I likey! It’s like YA and sci‑fi had a baby. Earth is basically falling apart, everything’s in ruins, and a selected group of people gets moved to a new planet called Novo. It was supposed to be progressive, creative, and free… but of course the leaders fell in love with power and control, and things went downhill fast. Now there are resistance groups on both planets, lots of secrets, lots of sneaking around, and I was hooked.

In Novo, the people in charge want to grow the population, so they create a mandatory dating program — imagine Tinder mixed with The_Bachelor. Every seventeen‑year‑old has to participate. After several rounds of dates with assigned suitors, the system picks your match. Ariana, our heroine, wants nothing to do with it. Her dream is a military career, not a government‑approved romance.

Then she gets paired with Cal — the boy she used to “hate” because he was cocky and too friendly. Except she slowly realizes she didn’t hate him at all. She just didn’t like that other girls liked him too. Their chemistry is sweet, messy, and very teenage, and the program does not appreciate them going off‑script.

And then there’s Zane — the boy who appears in her dreams every single night. She feels like he’s real, maybe from her past, but she can’t place him. That mystery adds a whole other layer to the story.

From there, the adventure kicks off. Think Hunger Games vibes, but instead of survival arenas, it’s Dating Games: spas, stylists, cooking classes, all designed to mold you into the perfect spouse. I found it all highly entertaining.

Because this is a whole new world, the author spends time describing how Novo works and what’s left of Earth. Honestly, some of it feels prophetic — like a warning about what happens if we don’t take care of our environment. And the political climate? Uncomfortably familiar, minus all the futuristic techy stuff.

The story is exciting and suspenseful. There’s cloak‑and‑dagger tension, young infatuation, family drama, possible betrayals, and plenty of heroism. The pace is a little slow at times, but it works because the world‑building needs space. Ariana and Cal kiss a lot — as hormonal teens do — but they don’t cross the line (thank you, Siobhan). I hurt for Ariana and everything she endures, and I admired her bravery and sense of justice.

Of course, it ends on a cliffhanger. World domination doesn’t wrap up in one book. I felt it coming — like a train speeding toward a collision — but it was still exciting and satisfying. Now I’m dying to know what happens next.

And now the big question: Zane or Cal?

I’m Team Zane, so let’s see where this goes.

Book review: LITTLE PIECES OF LIGHT, by Emma Scott

I’m always a little afraid of starting a book by Emma Scott because I know she’ll take my heart through a wringer. And she did! She makes me cry but also gives me immense happiness. What a beautiful story, so much emotion and heart! I felt profound feelings of loss and love, two lovers who are soulmates, have the perfect chemistry, and as the story evolves, they also evolve into a perfect entanglement.

Xander has felt loss in his childhood when his mother left him and his father.  His father is a wonderful man, a genius, who through the development of the story goes in a mental decline due to neurological illness.  Xander, who is also a genius, feels the weight of honoring his father by continuing his work. He also feels an enduring love for a little girl who gave him grace when he was lonely and sad, just after his mother left.  Through the years, he wrote her many letters without a response, but he never forgot her.

Likewise, Emilia never forgot that remarkable boy she met at a park who captivated her with his brilliant and beautiful mind, his kindness and for seeing her, not just the rich girl.  

When they meet again, both have their destinies written for them, but once they get past their miscommunication, their closeness is too much to sustain any level of separation, because they are entangled, endlessly and completely.

While Xander’s father was a fountain of love and joy (and worry), Emilia’s father was evil through and through.  Xander felt pressed on continuing his father’s work, and Emilia felt oppressed by her father’s expectations.  I felt suspense and worry as the book progressed because their love was so beautiful but it felt like everything was against them. There are sub-plots that add levels to the story and show us that family is not just the one you grow with, but the one you make with friends.  

I hurt for Emilia’s hope of saving her family and keeping them together, but also marveled at her fortitude when her house of cards fell down. Xander was so strong, feeling like life was giving him punches one after another, and yet standing strong, loving and being there.  His brilliant mind was such that he absorbed and admired the brilliance of Emilia’s creativity and how it shone similar to his. There’s a scene I loved where he shows her how he sees the world in equations while she sees the same things with her images.  Very Impressive!

There’s a meaningful phrase in the book, referring to the origin of the atoms that comprise our bodies:

“I love to think we’re pieces of the huge stars that light up the universe. They came together to make us, then dissolve away when we die. But we never wink out for good. We just keep going, our little pieces of light, coming together again and again, forever.”

But for me, the little pieces of light were bright moments during the story that stayed in my mind and gave me joy, like when Xander’s Math club had a party in Xander’s house and honored his father; when Ms. Alvarez helped Emilia obtain entrance and financial aid to UCLA; the few times that Emilia’s mother stood up for her; when Xander’s team won the first regatta and he won the respect and admiration of the coach and the team; when the doctor treating Dr. Ford and said he was kind and full of joy and his favorite patient.

As in all her books, the author shares some of her life experiences.  I felt her immense sadness and loss in the final scenes when Xander and Emilia’s worlds crack down, and also felt her resilience when both our lovers get up and forge on, honoring the people they lost.

Book review: YOU WERE NEVER NOT MINE, by Monica Murphy

Lancaster Prep Next Generation #4

August & Sinclair

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Young adult as only Monica Murphy can write them!  She gets their personalities, insecurities, catches that they’re beginning to mature but are not there yet, feeling the promises of the future but not sure yet where they’re going.  I love reading these YA books because I love the possibilities and the fumbling they do as they figure out their lives.  And this author shows it so brilliantly!

This story is told in two times, when Sinclair arrived at Lancaster Prep for freshman year and August was a senior.  He bullied her all that year, and she hated him and stood up to his insults but they did hurt and upset her.

Then four years later, August is a senior again, this time in Thornhill University and Sinclair arrives, again as a freshman.  He’s captivated from the beginning, but he has a role to play in this university, and that is of the arrogant and selfish wealthy guy who doesn’t mingle with the riff-raff.  He doesn’t recognize her which is wonderful because she hates him and treats him like he’s a monster, which baffles him.  I thought it was wonderful and just the right touch to tumble him from that pedestal he lived on.

I loved the story, loved how they moved on from enemies to friends to lovers, loved how much August changes.  He swore that the Lancaster curse was not true, nevertheless he kept his feelings tied up tight and didn’t get involved with any girl, just a hookup and done, so the curse will not activate.  And it did, regardless of his precautions.  I loved how caught he was! And he asked his father and his sister and they all ruled that, yep, he got it.  

The juxtaposition of falling in love for your bully was a wonderful plot and I loved the whole story.  August was sweet once he got over his uppity ways, he was so considerate and loving.  Sinclair was the perfect heroine, she didn’t kiss his butt, she sassed him, challenged him; in a way, she made him grow and develop all those good person feelings which were inside of him, lying dormant.

This was the perfect page-turner, YA story and a great finale for the Lancaster Prep series.  I only wish there was a Thornhill series because I would love to read Cyrus Thornhill’s story!
