Book review: BLACK SHEEP, by Skye Warren

Cirque de Miroirs #3

Perfect, as only Skye Warren can do it! The first book in this trilogy was exciting, the beginning of an adventure, escaping to the circus; the second was romantic, as the love flourished and affirmed between Sienna and Logan; and this one was angsty, full of despair for one, full of determination for the other. Logan is in prison for the murder of Sienna’s father, which we know is just not true. The specter of Logan’s father is very present in his mind, and all his demons are pummeling him. Sienna is on the warpath to free him, from prison and from his demons.

The story is rapid pace, angsty and anxious. We also get to see Sienna and her mother, as they repair their relationship.

It’s a page-turner story, as Sienna tries to free Logan and keep his circus together. All the baddies from earlier books appear again, trying to defeat this feisty woman. We also get a glimpse into Liam and Vanessa North, even one little fun peek at Elijah. This is one short, feisty story, full of despair and hope, angst and steam. Great finale!

WHITE LIES, by Skye Warren

I felt like the first part of this story was the adventurous, suspenseful part of the book, and the second part was the cheesy, romantic part. Both were enjoyable in Skye Warren’s inimitable style!

At the end of Red Flags, Sienna was accused of endangering the circus by scaling the ferris wheel just for fun. Logan didn’t believe her that she thought she was saving a little girl. Choosing to believe his circus family, he banished Sienna from the circus. She left, and was almost immediately kidnapped by her childhood bully Kyle and his minions. And yet, Logan had a niggling feeling that there was a lie involved and he had banished Sienna without reason. Once he confirms it, he finds Sienna’s little dog and realizes she’s been taken. And the hunt begins!

Sienna feels betrayed and abandoned once again, Logan feels immense guilt over having doubted her. A lot of information comes forth, as the story evolves and all the little intricate details of the plan to get rid of Sienna is out. In a way, Logan also feels betrayed by his friends, so there’s a lot of disappointment going around. Sienna is shown as very brave and resourceful, as usual. She’s a survivor!

Once Logan finds Sienna, we see a very remorseful Logan promising the world to Sienna, who feels like she can’t trust anyone anymore. This part was more angsty than suspenseful, and it was also more fun because they end up in North Security facilities, with Liam North and his wife Vanessa.

There are fun and cute parts, a lot of Logan groveling, which I enjoyed, steam as always, and we get a feeling that the future of Cirque Des Miroirs is somewhat in peril. We get another cliffhanger with a surprising plot twist, so now we have to wait for the final installment of this entertaining series!

Book review: RED FLAGS, by Skye Warren

I was a little wary of reading a book about a circus, but then I started to read and rolled my eyes at myself. It’s Skye Warren, of course it’s going to be riveting!

The author presents a circus of the modern world, it doesn’t use freaks or animals, but rather acrobats, a show story that uses special effects to titillate the imagination, nice rides and the usual booths of knife throwing and a fortune teller. She presents a magical world, but modern. I loved the circus life in this book!

Sienna Mae comes from an abusive home, set in a itty bitty town in Texas that has no prospects, no hope. A woman’s only options are to be a wife or a stripper. Men have a choice of going to college, join the army, or get a job logging wood. She has a bad reputation in town, courtesy of a friend turned enemy, now the town bully, Kyle. Life is pretty harsh and disagreeable for Sienna and she can’t wait to leave town. Her only worry is her mom, who has some warped sense of honor that makes her accept this life as her life.

When the circus hits town, she’s being abused by Kyle, as per usual, after defending another ex-childhood friend Tristan. This man appears out of nowhere and defends her. There’s an instant attraction between them, she learns his name is Logan and he invites her back to the circus.

What is riveting about this book is that it holds a lot of secrets but the feelings are crystal clear. Sienna feels a huge attraction for Logan, but her upbringing makes her cynical, distrustful, and standoffish. She suspects his motives all the time. Logan has a dark past, he’s full of secrets, and his motives for bringing the circus to Forrester, where he won’t make much of a profit, are suspect. He’s full of red flags, but when Sienna needed help, he was the one who made her feel safe. She left with the circus, but her problems are not over, they are just a different sort.

I immediately started rooting for Sienna and Logan. In spite of his secrets and guilt over his past, he feels like an good person who tries to do the right thing. He’s generous and protective about the circus employees, who he sees as family. His reason for coming to Forrester, once revealed, show he has good intentions. Sienna is smart and resilient. I loved to see she’s slowly opening up to Logan.

I screamed when the book ended in a cliffhanger and now I can’t imagine how to wait for the sequel. Once again, Skye Warren has sucked me into a trilogy and I will be biting my nails waiting for the next one!
