Initially, I was gobsmacked with this book, it was such a strange topic to pursue, a pandemic even worse than the one we suffered in 2019. I was a little triggered but mostly curious, so I read on, and then I was enchanted with the story.
The pandemic described in this book is much more deadly, billions die, and only a few survive. Then we have a situation similar to what happens in Lord of the Flies, you get good people who band together to help each other, and you get the bandits who pillage, forage, and abuse the power they got through forming a compound and trying to control the area around them, guns galore.
And in the midst of all this, the author gives us a lighthearted love story that starts with a kidnapping, ends with planting roots in a charming small town in California with good weather, and the formation of a community. I loved how everyone brought talents to the group, they read and studied how to survive without modern amenities, the cooperation and collaboration that allowed them to coexist and make a good living for all.
Dean and Astrid started being the kidnapper and kidnapped, then there’s mentions of Stockholm syndrome because, in truth, Dean did it to save Astrid, knowing she would risk her life to see her family. As the story evolves, as they find a little girl and adopt her, and they help form a community and are leaders in it, you see how their relation evolves into love. Their conversations are witty and funny, Astrid is a little wacky and Dean is patient and tolerant.
In the end, I found the story original and creative, I loved that there is good and bad, but the good ones triumphed which gives a message of hope, and I loved the slow evolution of Astrid and Dane. I don’t know why the author chose this theme but it was positive and hopeful instead of depressing, it was funny and lighthearted instead of desolated, and it ended with joy and happiness. The writing is excellent, the pacing is snappy, and I ended up loving this story. Totally recommend readers to read this adventure in doomsday land!
