Book review: TRY AGAIN, BABY, by Julia Wolf

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A warm, emotional second‑chance romance full of heart, family, and one unforgettable little girl! This story gave me big feelings in the best way. It starts with Mazzy, stranded in New Zealand, heartbroken and trying to get home on a cheaper ticket. She’s a mess, she knows it, and she’s honest about it — which is exactly why the cute stranger at the counter laughs with her instead of at her. That tiny moment of kindness turns into something huge when she learns he paid for her ticket and she’s suddenly sitting next to him in business class. Their chemistry is instant, sweet, and a little chaotic, and their one night together feels like two lost people finding comfort in each other.

Six months later, everything changes. Mazzy is pregnant, struggling with bills, trying to continue her studies. When she tries to tell Ben, he rejects her so harshly it breaks something inside her. She moves on, builds a life, and becomes the kind of mother who fights for her child’s health and happiness even when she’s exhausted. I loved her strength — quiet, steady, and so real.

Four years later, fate throws them back together in Denver. They learn that four years ago, she mistook Ben’s twin Roman. And the moment Ben learns he has a daughter? It’s gut‑punch emotional. He’s overwhelmed with joy, grief, and regret all at once. It felt like watching someone’s heart crack open. When he finally meets Katty, he’s done for — completely in love, completely changed. Those scenes made me cry; they were tender and full of longing for the years he missed.

From there, the book becomes a mix of healing, family chaos, and slow rebuilding. Ben is a big‑hearted rugby player with huge emotions and a tendency to leap before thinking. Mazzy is grounded, mature, and protective. Together, they find a rhythm that feels natural and sweet. His brothers fall in love with Katty instantly, and the family moments — the laughter, the teasing, the fierce loyalty — were some of my favorites.

I also loved Mazzy’s support system: Aunt Barb with her prickly love, Kylie with her wild influencer energy, and Shira with her gentle kindness. Katty steals every scene she’s in. She’s adorable, funny, and full of personality, and watching her bond with her dad was beautiful.

There is a lot of sex once Mazzy and Ben reconnect — long, detailed scenes that pop up often. For me, they slowed the story down, but skimming worked fine because the emotional core stayed strong.

My verdict: a heartfelt, funny, emotional romance about second chances, family wounds, and the fierce love between a father and the daughter he never knew he had. Mazzy’s strength and Ben’s huge heart make them easy to root for, and Katty brings all the sunshine. A warm, satisfying four‑star read.

She doesn’t believe in “guilty pleasures”, only pleasure. Reading about a plus size woman who gets absolutely railed by a hot rock star is pleasure. Reading about a damaged college student whose flaws are valued and loved by the grumpy guy next door is pleasure. Reading about love in a small town or big city or on a tour bus is pleasure. Reading romance is pleasure!

Book review: CAN’T GET ENOUGH, by Kennedy Ryan

Skyland #3

Hendrix & Maverick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kennedy Ryan not only writes a beautiful romance, she also educates and promotes her ideals.  I was embraced by the strength of her characters but also the love of friends and family.  It’s always an education to live inside the lives of black people, feel their fears, how much they have to fight to get ahead, double the effort of white people.  There’s also the strength of their support groups.  It feels like a different nation within the nation, fighting for survival and being free from persecution.

Central to the theme of this story is Alzheimers and how much impact it bears on the persons who act as caretakers.  The author took us on a journey that not only showed us the effort it takes, but also the fears of the person suffering the condition.  Hendrix’s love for her mama, and how their roles are now reversed, is heartbreaking and uplifting.  Also very present is the difficulties in taking care of a beloved parent when your work and your life is in another state.  Hendrix approaches everything with love and gratitude for the time she will have with her mother, never acting like her mama is an unbearable load.  I loved how Mav pursued her, always including her mother and her aunt in his attentions, never resenting the time they took Hendrix away from him.

I loved Mav’s tenacity in getting his girl, loved how different it felt when he was with Zere to being with Hendrix.  It shows that when you find THE ONE, you really compromise your ideas and your priorities because the one is the most important thing there is.

This is one story where love is everything and there is no compromise, only one choice.  Kennedy Ryan always enthralls with her stories, it’s not just love and sex, it’s the promotion of womanhood, of wonderful black people, how they love and support each other, the obstacles and fears they face. It’s an education, it’s a mission, it’s mind opening, and it’s just beautiful.

Book review: HOLD THE LINE, by Julia Wolf

The Kelly Ranch #2

Phoebe & Deacon

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Beautiful and so very moving! What a wonderful story, I loved every word, and loved the characters.  I love ex-con stories, love reading how they overcome the stigma of being seen as a felon and untrustworthy, how they feel unworthy of love.  In this case, Phoebe had a high school crush on Deacon, so when he moved to the apartment upstairs of hers, it was like a second chance, and she took it. He had to get over his issues in a hurry!

Deacon says that Phoebe smells like sugar, and she’s definitely sweet and beautiful inside and out.  Her family thinks she needs protection but she’s very solid and forthright.  Getting together with Deacon was as natural as breathing, in spite of his hesitation.  I saw Deacon as this man of true grit, who overcame a family of misfits, took his little sister out of that environment, did a favor to his brother and got arrested for it.  He served four years and now wants peace, to be able to work and get ahead.  I loved how Phoebe’s family, who are like royalty in this town, accepted him as one of their own, because he loved Phoebe so hard and made her happy.

The first three quarters of the story are wonderful and uplifting with some suspense coming from Deacon’s nasty older brother.  The last quarter is heartbreaking with nail-biting suspense.

I loved seeing Deacon’s transformation from a taciturn man of few smiles, to a guy who laughs and jokes, to the guy who cries when his beloved is in danger and hurt.  He opened his heart and his mind, and Phoebe made him whole.  Super romantic and just plain beautiful!

Book review: THE WAY WE COLLIDE, by Tia Louise

Bradford Boys #4

Hendrix & Raven

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I started reading this series with Garret’s book, The Way We Score.  I loved the Bradford boys, so asked for this title too.  And this one was even better!  I loved Hendrix, he’s thoughtful and honest.  He loves football, it’s his priority, and he makes it clear to all his dates, no exceptions.

Hendrix meets Raven at his sister’s wedding, Hendrix is a groomsman, Raven is a bridesmaid, and the usual clink happens.  Fifteen months later, Hendrix’ older brother Jack summons him home, and he gets to meet his baby daughter.  No doubts she’s his because she has his face and blue eyes.

I also loved Raven, she was driven and stubborn.  She wanted to be a meteorologist, and she walked away from her family who didn’t agree with her dreams.  Her mother, now dead, was controlling and abusive, and this marked Raven.  It also made her all the more determined to be a good mother to Hadley.

Raven moves to LA to live with Hendrix for a while so he can get to know his daughter.  They also marry so she can get access to her trust fund.  And of course, when two people have such a strong connection, the rest is history.  In this part of the story, I loved Hendrix’s evolution as a dad, and how his view of life changed as he embraced his role of a dad.

I loved how the story developed because their chemistry was so strong and electric, they had trouble keeping is strictly platonic. Hendrix was very considerate of Raven’s dreams and strived to help her achieve them.  They had so much in common, being together was so easy for them, but they had different dreams that pushed them apart.  I rooted to hard for them to make it!

The story was delightful, the pace great, and the characters around them, the Bradford siblings and the partners interesting.  I found Jack and Zane the most intriguing, so looking forward to their stories.
