Again, a mesmerizing story! I loved how the strength of good and evil have a battle here, parallel to the battle between Riley and Kai. Not all is good and not all is evil, some good from Riley rubs off on Kai and some of Kai’s darkness finds a place in Riley.
Both Kai and Riley come from monsters. Riley was sent to a boarding school to protect her from her monstrous father. There she rooms with Brooke Bennett, mafia princess and Kai’s little sister. They were best friends until Brooke was returned to her family one year and six months later. The Bennett father and head of their mafia family had died, Kai took over and he reunited all his siblings. Throughout the story you realize how fiercely Kai loves his siblings and how fiercely he protects them too. It’s like it’s his mission in life.
When thirteen years later Brooke goes missing, Kai kidnaps Riley, sure she helped Brooke somehow. They have so many back and forth that I was astounded at the patience and tolerance Kai showed Riley. Pretty soon I started to see their strong chemistry and Kai’s beginning obsession with Riley.
I loved the turmoil! Riley was equal parts disgusted by the evil side of Kai’s business but incredibly attracted to the man. Kai was falling in love and conflicted with losing control over his emotions. It was riveting, suspenseful, completely addictive. There was tenderness and strong passion, incredibly sexy scenes that later on change to love scenes. The reluctance to stay together and to separate was fraught with feelings and sadness.
As with Tijan’s other stories, the secondary characters are important to the plot and are additional sources of feelings. Brooke and Tanner and Jonah, Kai’s siblings, start to feel like family to Riley too. As she falls in love with Kai, she starts to feel loved and safe, whilst missing her ordered existence prior to this. It was a struggle beginning to end!
Superb story, awesome characters, a riveting story. Another blockbuster by Tijan!
