Book review: One for the Money, by Skye Warren

One for the Money #1

Eva Morelli & Finn Hughes

If I were to summarize the feelings this book evokes in me I would say: heartbreak.  Finn Hughes and Eva Morelli belong to the upper echelon of New York society, and they are uber rich.  And yet, they are prisoners of sort in their lives, prisoners to their circumstances.

Eva belongs to the Morelli family who are toxic and explosive.  Her father is a drunk and her mother a socialite who only cares about their family image.  The person who is there to help everyone is Eva, she’s the glue that holds that family together.  She’s thirty-three and her mother is coming up with candidates for her hand, older men who have already buried or divorced their first wives and are looking for a replacement, sort of like you do with your used car.  At one of these instances, Finn comes to her rescue and presto, fake relationship!

Finn hides a huge secret that keeps him the way he presents himself to the world, as a billionaire playboy, charming and unreliable except in business.  But as they embark in their fake relationship, Eva realizes there’s more to Finn than what he shows, and she’s resolute to find out.

Both hide secrets, both shun love for different reasons, both have dark sides in their families, and both are the caretakers in their family.  It’s a riveting story, steamy and sad and, at the moment, hopeless.  It ends in a cliffhanger, and hopefully, we can hope for a much more positive outlook in the future installments.  I loved both Eva and Finn, they are not your regular entitled and selfish billionaires, instead caring and giving persons who at the moment are trapped in their circumstances.  They are perfect for each other and I truly hope they can work towards their HEA.

Book review: Tropical Storm, by Skye Warren & Amelia Wilde

Desert Island #3

Finally, we get to see Carter in the midst of his family! I saw a brother, Leo, desperate to help his brother and rescue him.  And I saw Carter fighting him off, thinking to protect him back.  I loved seeing how Carter lost it when they took Theo into the operating room.

We see a Carter with very intense feelings, a ton of mistrust, and a ton of concern to do the best for June and Theo.  However, I thought his mistrust was misplaced as I saw so much concern and love from his siblings.  Leo would kill a whole nation for his brother and somehow I felt Carter did not get this.

There were a lot of currents in Leo’s house and I loved seeing how love for baby Abby neutralized a lot of the heightened feelings.  I saw how Carter feared his father’s opinion of himself and his relation with June and Theo.  I was impatient with Theo and his preoccupation with the sin in the city and how it would corrupt him.  He’s a beautiful soul but so naive, so misguided by his mentally troubled mother.

I loved seeing how this group of siblings circled their wagons around Carter and his loves.  How their love covered them all and how much acceptance there was.  Carter was so blinded by his concerns that he didn’t notice this.

The spy/mole portion of the story added suspense but somehow felt inconclusive.

Loved seeing a vulnerable Carter, a loving Theo, and a supportive June.  June was truly the bond that kept these two sane and together.  She faced Carter when he was at his most wild and kept Theo grounded so he wouldn’t fly too much at the sins he felt all around.  It was a great finale, with all the Morelli siblings so present and even Grandpa Morelli doing his stint, getting all gooey with baby Abby.

Book review: Natural Disaster, by Skye Warren & Amelia Wilde

Desert Island #2

Normally, a middle book in a trilogy feels more like a transition book than a complete book.  It usually develops the plot a little further, but this one really took us on a thrilling trip! Started with a blast and ended with a blast and now we’re all agog to read the final story in this riveting trilogy.

In the cliffhanger of the first book, June was captured by the bad guys who we still don’t know who they are.  Theo got a burr on his butt about devils and wrong doings and thought he was doing a good turn, or maybe relieving himself of wicked thoughts and wicked actions.  He delivered June to the bad guys and they took her with them on a plane.  Carter had heard the plane and arrived running, too late to rescue June and Theo got a deserved thrashing from Carter.  From here on, it’s non stop action, only stopping for scorching sex scenes, most them threesomes.  I loved the sex scenes that these authors wrote, they weren’t twenty pages of detailed action but more the description of how the characters feel and how the scene developed, more feelings and more connection between the three.

I didn’t like Theo in the first book but I did in this one.  I understood his confusion about his feelings and his actions and loved how he developed loyalty and obedience towards Carter.  I loved Carter’s struggles with his feelings.  He tried hard to stay detached and in spy mode, but it was a hard fight and eventually the man won over the spy.  Loved having Leo and Eva in the story even if through phone calls!

Feelings are revealed and issues are discussed, including Carter’s feelings about his family.  I was wondering why Carter keeps a distance from his family and in this book we learn most of it.  I also saw that Daphne Morelli is the sibling closest to him and that Leo is there for his brother, whether he wants it or not.

It’s entertaining and suspenseful and develops the story very nicely before it blasts us again with a very scary cliffhanger.  Now for the Morelli family part of this story!

Book review: Force of Nature, by Skye Warren & Amelia Wilde

Desert Island #1

Carter, June, & Theo

With such a dramatic prequel, now we get into the nitty gritty story! It was full of action and suspense, some more bickering between June and Carter, and then some sizzling sexy times.  There’s a scene that is so freaking hot!  And then, when we’re finally getting somewhere, we got our spectacular cliffhanger.

What I loved: that June got into Carter’s skin really bad.  He was increasingly protective and possessive.  When she got sick he even prayed!  His thoughts about himself and his family are revealed and he thinks they are all evil from the core.  There’s a secret from his childhood, not revealed yet, and there’s a reason why he’s stayed away from his family for so long.  I got a feeling that he’s doing some sort of penance or cleanse, which I fervently hope will be revealed in the final book.  Really, apart from seeing the increasing closeness and caring between June and Carter, most of what I got were more questions.

Carter is fighting a moral dilemma all through the book, follow protocol or follow his heart?  Then when someone else appears in the island, who is not foe but an unknown quantity, the suspense ratchets up.  It truly was a great segment of suspense and mind turmoil about what to do.  And that cliffhanger really made me want to throw something.  I don’t know how I will be able to wait for the final book in this story.  I have lots of theories and can’t wait to see which one works out.  Way to keep a reader entranced and then shock us throughly!

Desert Island #0.5

Carter Morelli and June Porter

And of course, it ends in a cliffhanger!  We get this uber interesting story about Dr. Carter Morelli, of the infamous Morelli family, about to get into a flight to Africa.  He’s escorting a wildlife photographer but there are hidden agendas.  He’s not just a boring professor who specializes in rhizomes! He’s a hunk, he’s devious and he’s dark!

Poor June Porter is in for a surprise!  Incredibly afraid of planes, she’s about to get into this ultra luxurious but itty bitty plane with Professor Morelli.  He’s going to be the pilot and the flight takes 10 hours.  But wait! She forgot her Xanax and there’s no time to go get them.

There’s a crash, there’s a kiss, there’s an incredible attraction that is playing hard against Morelli’s concentration and there’s an urgency to fix things.  Stay tuned for more action!

Book review: Hockey With Benefits, by TIJAN

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As soon as this ARC appeared in my Kindle library, I fell into reading it, immediately.  I finished my Tijan addiction, and now I have a book hangover!

Mara Daniels appeared in Rick Prick, she was Blaise DeVroe’s friends with benefits before he fell in love with Aspen.  Mara used to be one of the mean girls in Fallen Crest Academy but now she’s different.  She’s closed off, never shares anything personal, shies away from friendship, keeps to herself.  She has a strict no-friends with benefits relation with Cruz Styles, first line in Grant West U’s hockey team.  It’s like a done and gone type of thing, but inevitably, the situation evolves because you can’t help but start to care for a person who is so decent to you.

In spite of being so standoffish, people still flock to Mara because they see through her prickly exterior to the sweet person underneath.  She doesn’t notice it, but her random acts of kindness are noticed.  Her roommates are initially reticent but as the book develops, they get close.  And the crowning star is that Zeke Allen appears! In all his crazy, cute, and loyally stalkerish ways, he locks on to Mara as a friend.

I loved reading Mara’s evolution, from this lonely person who shied away from relations, to this girl who had loyal girlfriends fighting for her.  As Mara and Cruz share incidents where both are victims or involved, it’s inevitable that they get closer.  Both Mara and Cruz struggle with some real family issues, it’s heartbreaking.  There comes a moment in a couple’s life where they have decide to be present or absent.  I was so happy that they decided to be present!

In Tijan’s universe, there are many connections where characters from other books make an appearance.  In this case, I was thrilled to see Zeke, Blaise and Tasmin.  There’s a rich college life with parties, booze and fraternities.  Always something hopping!

I loved Mara and Cruz as a couple!  They were perfect for each other, strong for each other, healing each other.  There was one moment in the book where Mara was overwhelmed and heartbroken and Cruz was truly her hero.  There’s so much goodness in them, and I was so glad to see the crowd of friends with them, supporting, helping and in Zeke’s case, being the humor of the moment.

Lovely story, it’s always a mesmerizing read with this author, lovely to find old friends in the story and awesome love story.

Book review: Kian, by Tijan

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love Kian!  He’s so intriguing, and for me, from the start, he’s obviously in love with Jordan.  This story is so romantic, with delicious dark undertones.  Kian saves Jordan from being killed by her foster father by killing him instead.  There was a trial, Jordan was a frequent attendant in gratitude, and Kian always looked at her, so profoundly, so keenly.  There’s a thought frequently repeated in the story, he gave up his freedom so she could be free.  It was so sad, and I hoped it would not turn out that way!

The media was relentless with Jordan and forced her to go into hiding.  An FBI agent, Stark, helped her get a new identity and she changed appearances, then went to Hillcrest University.

We live with Jordan her conflicted feelings as Kian is released from prison two years after the trial due to a dirty judge.  She’s incredibly attracted to Kian but also afraid of being assaulted by the media so she needs to keep in hiding.  Stark is always convinced that Kian’s family will go after her to prevent him from being tried again in court.

Their love feels forbidden but irresistible.  Kian has a vibe of darkness and danger, and Jordan is afraid but when she’s with him she feels safe.  She never doubted Kian’s good intentions to protect her, it was the people around her that confused her.  I love Kian’s relentlessness in pursuing Jordan, I loved how sweet and good Jordan is.  At one moment, her friend and roommate Erica needed her to be present at Kian’s interview and she went, determined to be there for her friend, in spite of her anxiety, that’s how selfless she is.

The story kept me fascinated and anxious to learn what will happen. I was rooting very hard for them to be able to be together.  It was a wonderful combination of events and actions, feelings and doubts, yearning and mistrust, super fascinating and addicting as all this author’s books are.
