Book review: HOTTER ‘N HELL, by Abbi Glines

Mississippi Smoke #2

Saylor & Jude

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In Tore Up, we learn about Saylor, Crosby’s long-time girlfriend, and how Crosby cheated on her with Halo.  That was Halo’s story, and it was a doozy of angsty tears and heartbreak.  We get the impression that Saylor is a self-centered drama queen but in this book, Abbi Glines does a 180-turn and changes our mind, completely.  In a brilliant move, we get this mafia princess falling in love with a priest and we get wowed by this delicious forbidden story.

This is not the first priest falling in love story I’ve read, I love the humanity of it, a man giving in to his natural urges to mate with the woman he loves, the turmoil of guilt, of broken vows, but ultimately the correct stance that man is not borne to live a celibate life, but to love and be loved, to have a companion.  I’m Catholic, and I truly believe it’s not natural for a man to live celibate all his life.

I loved this story, I loved learning about a girl who moved aside all her organizational talents in favor of being the woman Crosby wanted.  When the betrayal happens, she needed to find herself, and in doing so, she found true love, not the friends kind of love she had with Crosby.

This was such a wonderful story in so many aspects.  Finding your true north, finding true love, being generous and giving in that love relation, and the self-realization of what makes her happy and fulfilled.  I ended up loving Saylor and feeling compassion for her, because she went through trauma and betrayal before finding love.  I loved how Than and Gathe protect and defend her, although I was furious with them at some point.  Loved how Halo was so friendly and open when they meet, loved seeing Bane being such a devoted husband.  This Southern Mafia series continues to surprise me, delight me, keeps me addicted, and feverishly waiting for the next one.  Now I wonder: how is Abbi Glines going to surpass the epic story of Halo and Saylor? I can’t wait to find out!

Book review: LEGIONS, by Abbi Glines

Georgia Smoke #7

Thatcher & Capri, again!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another winner! I didn’t know I needed this novella, and I just loved to have some more Thatcher and Capri!  Thatcher appears more vulnerable and more attached to Capri than before, like she’s the air he needs to breathe.  I saw a more self-assured Capri, secure in the love of her man and feeling wanted, needed, and beloved.

It’s lovely and steamy and such a page-turner as we see new events happening in Capri’s family.  There’s one incident that filled me with hope in that Thatcher may have a better family life.  All in all, a winner and a happy addition to my collection of beloved psycho boyfriends.

Book review: IF YOU NEED ME, by Helene Hunting

Toronto Terror #3

Dallas & Hemi

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wish I would have liked this book more, but I didn’t love Hemi and Dallas, at least not in the beginning.  I disliked the initial scene although I did see the intent to be humorous.  The fact that Dallas gets erections from anxiety is a little weird.  And Hemi’s treatment of Dallas in that initial part of the book felt like it bordered on abuse, as she constantly scolded and threatened Dallas with sending him to a clown assignment, knowing he detested clowns.

Once the book got going and the plot was developing, I got to know Hemi and Dallas closer and could see where they were coming from and I liked them so much more.  Hemi and Dallas knew each other from high school, and whereas Dallas has been in love with Hemi for a long, long time, Hemi always saw him as one of the popular boys of the school and part of the group who tortured her for being unapologetically different.  Hemi has always been driven and focused, unwilling to go along with the popular group.

Many in the Terror hockey organization feel that she’s too much, but Dallas adores her and always defends her.  As they are forced to fake a relation, they get close, their families get close and both are faced with a different version of the reality they thought they knew.

I actually loved seeing those two together, once they got over their initial attitudes and started to work as a couple.  Hemi’s increasing dependence on Dallas softened her and made her more approachable.  She was hard with Dallas but a wonderful friend to her girl brigade.  Once I understood Hemi, I started to like her.  Dallas is an impulsive goof but he’s kind and decent all through, I always liked him, and love how steadfast he was in his feelings for Hemi.

So, apart from that first scene, the book was a delight, it had some wonderful emotional moments, as well as the funny ones.  Dallas and Hemi were wonderful together, and I loved that Hemi found someone who understood her and accepted her as she is, strong and passionate and very much driven, but with an inner core of an insecure girl who needs acceptance.  Dallas provided that and more, and the love and sexy story was wonderful (except the initial scene!).

Book review: SPEAK OF THE DEVIL, by S.L. Scott

He’s a rockstar, she’s a nurse; he loves chaos, she loves order; he was attracted to her when they were in high school, she had a huge crush on him.  Ten years after they graduated high school and a “what-if” moment, they meet again because, gasp! they’re married and didn’t know it.  Their reunion was crazy and they started to work it out. And we got a beautiful love story!

The pace of the story is slow but I loved it because I was relishing and enjoying every moment with these two.  Shane had always had a thing for Cate but didn’t have the guts to act on it way back in high school so this was his chance.  I loved that Cate wanted him and treated him like a regular person, not a rockstar.  I liked that she was a very centered person who worked hard during high school and college to get where she was, a geriatric nurse, who loves her work and loves her patients.  One of her patients, Maggie, is a hoot and gave great comic relief to the story.

I was as intrigued as them as to how they got married, so I followed each page feverishly.  I enjoyed the story, love how Cate learned to enjoy a little bit of chaos and Shane gave a try to plans and order.  The love that grew between them was a beautiful thing to see, it was so hard and true.  Especially Shane who had enjoyed quite the rockstar life.  I loved how much he tried to protect her from paparazzi’s and the sleazy part of the press, and how accepting Cate was of what being with Shane entailed.  It was not a thrilling read, but more of a Sunday enjoyable read, and I loved every minute.  It was just the respite I needed after a turbulent couple of weeks and this was the best medicine.  Can’t wait for more from this author!

Book review: THE FORGOTTEN ONE, by Catherine Bybee

The Heirs #2

Max & Sarah

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was an absolutely beautiful story, full of emotions and a strong social message. Max is a product of the Foster system and it’s made painfully clear how the children are treated like parcels, shuffled about, treated in an impersonal manner, like they are burdens instead of precious cargo. What an apt name of the forgotten ones! They fall thru the cracks, their development and happiness not a priority.

While the story gives a strong message, it also gives us a beautiful love story about the boy who grew up in the foster system, believing himself to be an orphan, and all of sudden, he acquires two siblings and an inheritance that took some time to process, it was so mind-boggling. It also brought him Sarah, the reporter tasked with investigating a tip that linked Max Smith with Aaron Stone.

I loved reading about this man, with a rugged face, cement walls around his heart, learn to love and to trust. Even though he was a hardened man, he had a kind and generous heart and we see many moments that just melt your heart.

I loved how the love developed between these two. Max had never before felt seen, understood, and supported like he felt with Sarah. From a one-night stand man, he was now contemplating forever! And Sarah saw beneath the façade to the little boy who wanted love so she gave it freely.

I loved the first book in this series, loved this one just as much and now I can’t wait for Alex’s story. It promises to be a blast, because Alex is such a force of nature. There’s a lot of expectation as you read this book, board room drama and intrigue, investigations and a learning curve for a blue collar man who enters the world of billionaires. I can’t begin to express enough what a fantastic page turner and how riveting this book is!

Book review: STEAL MY HEART, by Laura Pavlov

Rosewood River #1 Easton & Henley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Incredibly delightful!  This is a brilliant first installment in another small town series...
