Book review: CROSSROADS, by Devney Perry

I think this is one of Devney Perry’s most complicated books, but also the most magnificent. I went from laughs, to tears, to despair, from hope to hopelessness, all the emotions. The story covers present time with flashes to when Indya and West met, she was eight, he was ten. Indya and her parents came for a week vacation to West’s father’s ranch and resort. Initially, West was ordered by his father to play with her during the week she and her parents stayed. This happened every year for a week on June, then they would go back home to Texas. We delight on the evolution of their friends to lovers story.

In present time, Indya has just purchased the ranch, which was about to go bankrupt, and West’s father didn’t inform anyone. Cue hate, betrayal, despair. It was such a difficult and hard time for Indy, as she navigated saving the ranch and loving West. Imagine the heartbreak for West as he loses the ranch that he considered his legacy, his father’s betrayal since he sold it behind his back. This was Devney Perry at her best! I could feel the hopeless love from Indya, the reluctant love from West, the incredible hurt West and his brother felt towards their father. 

And interspersed throughout the story, Indya’s love and devotion for her dad.  I loved her clumsiness, her penchant for eavesdropping, her incredible generosity, intelligence, and determination.  In West, I loved that despite feeling betrayed, he didn’t offend, but dealt as best he could, and didn’t let anyone disrespect Indy.

The author did a perfect job navigating past and present in this story. There was a serendipity feeling about Indya and West’s romance, like star-crossed lovers, so steamy!  The missed opportunities gave me hives, I was despairing of them getting it right.  Devney Perry navigated both story lines seamlessly and it felt like we got two love stories in one book.  I have faith that the next book will be just as wonderful and I can’t wait for it!
