Book review: SIZZLING, by Abbi Glines

Georgia Smoke #3

Storm Kingston & Briar Landry

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There’s one thing that all the guys in this series have in common: total obsession with their women.  Storm falls into this condition when he meets Briar, in a mission to help King find the monsters in his wife Rumor’s past. The difference here is that he also felt scorn for Briar because she’s a gold digger. I think his soul felt a difference because he couldn’t completely hate her, and he fought against this obsession and lost.

Briar is a gild digger but as you read her, you understand that she’s playing with the cards she’s been dealt with. She may seduce rich men out of their money, but there’s a good purpose behind that: protect and provide for a young girl, who was a victim like Briar when she was her age.

There’s darkness but also kindness, because Maeme is present in this story too. Also, Storm acts like a jerk but he’s not unkind, especially when he finds there’s a young girl involved. I could smack him for always thinking worse about Briar’s actions instead of finding out the truth. There’s love and protection from Briar to her charge and also guilt for not being able to provide a better life.

I loved all the jesting Storm got from his friends about his obsession and denials. I especially loved Thatcher’s teasing, I feel we’re getting closer to his book and can’t wait!

There’s not much Mafia gritty stuff, mostly Storm obsessing over Briar, and Briar resisting. The story is a slow burn due to Storm’s denial, but when it finally happens it was scorching.  It was entertaining, and it fed the obsession us readers have with this addictive series. The book ends in a cliffhanger and I can’t imagine what will come next, but I’m ready for more Storm and Briar!

Book review: CRUEL KING OF NEW YORK, by Siobhan Davis

The Accardi Twins #2

Caleb Accardi & Elisa Salerno

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If Cold King of New York was a fantastic book, this one knocked it out of the park.  It was so exciting to read Caleb Accardi so in love, so determined to win over the love of his beloved, to fix what was wrong between them.  I expected to read about jerk Caleb, and instead I was charmed by a Caleb very deeply in love, very concerned because Elisa wasn’t speaking to him.

Apart from the love story that was incredibly entertaining and enthralling, the Mafia business is having problems, there are traitors around, moles within the soldatos, imminent danger from an unknown powerful source.  The suspense kept me enthralled, the love story kept me enchanted.

I loved seeing Joshua and Gia so lovey-dovey, and all the drama I expect from Siobhan Davis regarding the Mafia world as the action is resolved.  The author doesn’t like her reviewers to give out spoilers, so I can just say that these two books are everything and more than I expected.  Completely enjoyable, even with all the nitty-gritty violence. The love stories, the lady loves, the twins, the aunts, uncles, and cousins, all made for a wonderful book, visiting old friends, and enjoying another installment in this series that is the best from this author, in my opinion.  Superb!

Book review: THE PROBLEM WITH PLAYERS, by Brittainy Cherry

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Avery and Nathan were sweethearts, very briefly, before he left for the baseball majors. The breakup was brutal and left Avery devastated, and she has since hated him with a vengeance. Ten years later, when he was hired to work with her, coaching the high school baseball team, she heaps insults and hatred on Nathan continuously.

Avery was also engaged, soon to marry in a few weeks. There was no reason for the hatred, and even less reason to continue her wedding plans with the red flags her fiancé was giving out. The wedding didn’t happen and we see a very concerned Nathan helping Avery out of the difficult situation.

At this point, I realize that Avery is the grump and Nathan the sunshine. He’s caring, never forgot Avery, and he’s sorry they ended so badly all those years ago. Avery is what I would call her own worst enemy. She’s prickly and emotionally unavailable, even to her own fiancée. She also holds a grudge way longer than she should!

What I liked about this book is the combination of humor and angst. The banter was absolutely brilliant! The characters were very perfectly imperfect, especially Avery, who has severe trust issues. I didn’t like her at times because she treated Nathan badly, but there were times where the goodness of her heart shone brilliantly.  I was impatient for her to get over her issues, or maybe get help, but she was stubborn, and she held on to her issues.

I liked that the story was slow burn but didn’t like that the author kept making conflicts and making the book longer.  It was entertaining until it started to drag and I was getting impatient to get this resolved.  I loved Nathan, he was everything a boyfriend should be, supportive, caring, understanding, and used humor to make a situation better.  He was brilliant!  Avery was sometimes cute and funny in her sassiness, she was a good sport, a great coach to her students.  There’s a scene where one of her star players had a bad situation and she knelt with him, hugging him hard, while he broke.  It was very emotional and showed what a big heart she has.

In summary, it was a great story, I loved the psychology involved, loved all the family loved portrayed in both Nathan’s and Avery’s family, liked how the author treated the themes of depression and anxiety, and completely loved Nathan.  He’s the perfect book boyfriend! I deducted one star because when I thought the plot was getting resolved, the author came up with more problems and extended the story too much, in my opinion.

FOSTER, by Sawyer Bennett

Pittsburg Titans # 13

Foster & Mazzy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love this series and the Titans family! By this time, they feel like friends, and I like reading a new story in this world plus reading about the other players and their S.O.’s.

This story was particularly lovely, it’s a nanny trope, which is not my favorite but in Sawyer Bennett’s hands, it’s perfectly written into a great love story.  Mazzy is a wonderful nanny and Foster was lucky to get her for his daughter, Bowie Jane.  Foster’s ex-wife used to be an excellent mother, but she flaked when she got a new boyfriend, plus Bowie Jane didn’t like the guy.  When the mother was pushing to move to Singapore and take their daughter, Foster took her to court and got custody, hence a nanny because the hockey team has tons of away games.

Foster was an excellent dad, and Mazzy was wonderful, both as a nanny and as a person.  Very intelligent and caring, she was also very talented music-wise.  She had a wonderful family and she could give Bowie Jane examples of what a happy functional family looks like.

I loved how the author developed the plot, the surprise plot twist towards the end, very exciting, and how the love between Foster and Mazzy developed.  Bowie Jane was an adorable ten year old, wise for her age, so cute and sweet.  As always, entertaining, wonderful story, lovely characters, and a great plot.  Please keep them coming! I can’t wait for Penn Navarro’s story, he sounds so intriguing!
