The Edens #6
Mateo & Vera
It’s a sad day indeed when we say goodbye to this wonderful series! I’ve loved reading each and every one of the Eden siblings’ stories and the partners they found love with. As the series unfolded, it was as if there was a bigger group of friends, more characters to love. I appreciated the barbecues, the impromptu dinners, all the family ribbing. As the babies started to arrive, I rejoiced with Anne and Harrison and their grandkids running around the house. It’s very sad to leave this family, indeed.
This story was specially special as it contains two very angsty plots: Vera’s unrequited love for Mateo Eden, and her endless quest to find her father in the mountains surrounding Eden farm.
Vera has loved Mateo Eden since the first time she met him. She’s kept her feelings on hold, working on herself, waiting until she feels normal and can handle a relationship. And all the time, continues searching for her father. The story of Vera and her father Cormac Gallagher started in Crimson River and ends in this one. A heart-wrenching story of loss, Vera has been missing her father and looking for him all over the peaks surrounding the Eden ranch, mostly Sable Peak.
All her feelings about her tragic past are pushed inside a mental box, locked tight, thrust deep down into her soul, so the feelings don’t overwhelm her and drown her. She’s strong and resilient, truly a warrior.
Mateo suddenly leaves and brings back a newborn baby girl. Now that he’s a new dad, Vera realizes she has to wait more for Mateo because he has a new priority. Then one day, in a drunken haze, Vera’s box opens a little and some of her despair comes through. Mateo changes focus from his baby girl to Vera and a new world opens for him. And we get a beautiful love story with this wonderful man who supports and backs his woman.
Reading Devney Perry is like a comfort read, where you get intense emotional moments but you also get hope and family support. At no time you feel deep despair because there are arms nearby ready to embrace. There are moments of incredible sadness, and in Vera’s case, hopeless fear of never finding her father. But always, there’s the love of a wonderful man, a precious little girl, and the support of an awesome family.
I loved how Mateo, once he opened his eyes and really saw Vera, he also saw his future. He was behind her in all her decisions, very supportive and very empathetic. When she wanted to run, he didn’t stop her, he just ran with her until she stopped. And then he caught her in his arms and consoled. For me, Vera was broken, but she was strong inside. She took strength from Anne, she took understanding from Harrison, and she took friendship from Talia, Eloise, and Lyla, and worked hard to feel part of the bunch. I felt for her as she constantly questioned whether she was being normal or weird. In the end, she was complete!
