Pittsburg Titans #8
Camden & Danica
I felt admiration and sadness as I read this story, admiration for Danica and sadness for Camden, who suffers survivor guilt. Camden Poe is one of the Pittsburgh Titans “Lucky Three”, as in he, together with Coen and Hendrix, weren’t in the Titan’s plane when it crashed and everyone inside died. Initially, he mourned, attended a lot of funerals, but then he did what his father always told him: “suck it up and be strong”, no feelings discussed. Now, one year later, he’s having nightmares and it has affected his game. His coach ordered him to attend one of the support group meetings or else, so he went.
“I grieved, I mourned, I lamented. I accepted that I was granted grace while others were not. So why [….] am I continually plagued by a plane killing me?”
At the meeting, he chanced upon Danica, whose husband Mitch died in the crash. Camden and Mitch were good friends, worked on the same defense line, and he was happy to catch up with Danica. He realized how nice it was to chat with her, and when she explained that her son Travis was having problems with his youth hockey coach, he jumped in to offer help. Being with Danica allowed him to express more than he would to a group and eventually he started to feel better. He also started to feel other things with Danica, which she returned and a relation started to develop.
“I’d like to do more if his mom wants, but I don’t want to overstep in any way. I know that by helping them, I feel better inside. I guess that’s why Coach wanted me to connect with the support group”
I felt lots of admiration for Danica, she lost a husband and her source of income, but she reorganized her life, took charge of her finances and raising her son alone, made all necessary arrangements to ensure their future and took on a job for which she didn’t feel qualified but worked hard at success. She inspired Camden to deal with his problems which were not as significant, and try to achieve the peace and happiness she was at.
I loved how they love blossomed and how caring Danica was of Camden and his survivor’s guilt. I felt for Camden, because he felt like he was stepping on Mitch’s footsteps and didn’t always feel meritorious. His insecurity about the bro code, even if his teammate is dead, was serious and important for him. He was working on himself and wanting the best for his team. He really was in a conundrum and hurting.
