DR. CEO, by Louise Bay

Doctor series #3

Vincent & Kate

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When I read the previous Doctor books, I saw Vincent as a closed up guy, absent-minded but present for his aunt and uncle.  In his book, I understand he stays a little aloof from his family due to past history, when his parent’s marriage imploded and he was left high and dry with a mother who doesn’t care.  He learned not to be attached to people or places.  That is, until he met Kate.

I loved Kate! She’s kind and funny, such a good person that everyone loves her.  Her childhood was chaotic so she treasures the routine and small town living that she gets at the  Crompton estate, living in a little cottage with her granny next door.  She’s such a happy person, completely content with her life and her surroundings.  What’s a little rundown cottage and an estate that is falling into ruins? There are wonderful gardens full of flowers that make it all beautiful.

Enter Vincent Cove and he finds in Kate all that he never knew he needed.  She centers him and makes him a better person, happier and surer of himself.  I loved the couple they make and how they make each other feel safe and content.  But of course, Vincent has doubts and waffles!

This was such a beautiful, cute and tender love story.  I loved Kate and her goodness, and loved Vincent and his insecurities.  I especially loved seeing him with his cousins who love him as a brother and he hadn’t realized that.  You need to read to discover all the ways that Kate and Vincent complete each other and how the Coves embrace Vincent into their closed knit family group.  And it doesn’t need Vincent frequent bribes to his uncle with cases of good wine!

I finished the book in a great mood because there was a lot of love in this book!

SHATTERED TRUTHS, by Helena Hunting

Lies, Hearts & Truths #3

BJ & Winter

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this book so much, what a fantastic story! Loved Winter and BJ! There’s a word that is repeated often in the book and I feel it represents what the book meant for me: hope.  Hope that had wings and delivered for Winter and gave her a much better future than she ever expected.

Winter comes from a dysfunctional family with an abusive father and a cowering mother. She was conditioned to give up her own dreams in order to serve her family.  When she met BJ, he opened her eyes to a different future and gave her hope.

I loved that Winter, in spite of her hard life, is still spunky and fun.  She delighted BJ and he instantly felt the connection.  I was afraid that as he learned about her baggage, he would find it too heavy, but nooooo, he was connected, he was involved and he dived in to help.

Winter plays hockey and BJ is a figure skater, both love the ice and are athletes, so he invited her to the ice rink and she wowed his father, Randal Ballistic and his uncle Alex Waters.  She was invited to the women’s summer hockey team and after some convincing, she accepted.  And with this acceptance, she entered a different world, full of acceptance, hope and opportunities.

BJ is easy going, falls asleep anywhere, flirty and fun.  He swoons Winter with his jokes and great humor, his offers of a good time.  I loved the banter between them and their fun sexy times where there are laughs intertwined with the moans.  He’s enchanting, she’s intense and they are perfect together.

Apart from the humor and the lovely romance, there is heartbreak and longing that I felt very strongly.  Winter’s situation appealed so much to me, the heartbreak of feeling trapped in a situation where she wants to escape but doesn’t have the means. She’s working hard but still has to scramble. And when her father hits, she despairs and breaks for her mom.  It broke my heart and made me angry for her.

I loved how, in exchange, BJ’s family, extended family and friends, gather together and help.  Hope has wings, as BJ says, and it was no truer than when everyone chipped in.

It was a feel good story, with great humor and a great human interest side.  I thought I was going to read a young adult story and ended up with so much more, and a very happy heart.

Book review: MAFIA KINGDOM, by C.D. Reiss

Only CD Reiss can redeem a character you didn’t like in previous books, and she’s done it twice.  First with Dario Lucari from the DiLustro Arrangement trilogy and now with Massimo Colonia, from the Manhattan Mafia trilogy!

The Colonia family in NYC has been destroyed, Massimo’s father killed, his sister shot him in the leg to get away, and now he’s kept prisoner in Naples, forced to work for Cappo Orolio.  As he walks around this walled city, everyone throws fruit peels, coffee dregs and insults on him, call him the betrayer.  He’s tried to escape several times, but there’s always guards at the city doors.  So he’s resigned to a life of servitude.

When he meets Delfina, he’s reminded of the painting of Lucrecia that he looked so often in the museum.  Immediately, on first sight, he’s fixated on her.  When he hears about Armistice Night and the ceremony where the selected daughters are offered to the Montefiore famiglia as if they were buying cattle, he decides to save Delfina from that and escape together from Naples.  A high order that I didn’t think would be possible.

There’s a ton of machinations and negotiations.  Massimo doesn’t have a lot of power but Delfina has a lot of gumption and determination.  I found Massimo strangely honorable, and very much feeling the loneliness of having nobody.  This was a riveting read, in spite of Massimo always being at a disadvantage both from his social position and his wonky leg.  His attitude, however, was very much of an exiled King.

It was enjoyable, the last part very nail-biting exciting.  It was a fun read, with CD Reiss’ wonderful prose and riveting stories.   The book is a bridge between the previous Manhattan Mafia and a future Mafia series presenting a new trope, vampire mafiosos.  We met the first one in this story, Carmine Montefiore.  Intriguing!

Book review: WHISKEY SMOKE, by Abbi Glines

Smoke series #6

Levi & Aspen

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this one! I got a kick out of seeing Levi getting domesticated.  He took one look at Aspen and got hooked and then they embarked on this merry trip.

Some people grumbled about Levi’s back and forth but I loved every moment of Levi’s indecision.  The experiences a child lives during the first years of life affect how they think, and in Levi’s case, watching how his father’s actions hurt his mother shaped his feelings on love and marriage.  So it’s no surprise to see him so set against love and monogamy.  Until Aspen, of course!

I loved seeing his protectiveness and possessiveness with Aspen against his wish to be free to pursue sex in other venues.  Kye was a naughty boy, flirting with Aspen to get a rise of of Levi, LOL.  I loved seeing how Aspen, in her innocence and beguiling beauty reined Levi in, not manipulating but just being sweet and sincere, sharing her feelings and offering him freedom.

This book was a page turner for me, and I truly enjoyed watching Levi’s dual personality, sweet and loving with Aspen, deadly and psycho in his job.  One of my favorites in this series, together with Shiloh and Gage’s story.  Can’t wait for the next!
