Book review: GOLDEN TOUCH, by Sarina Bowen

Sweet romance, with some spice and some suspense?, ring me in!  Sarina Bowen gives us a smartass heroine, super intelligent and ultra defensive, very hard to get, until she met this sweet and sexy man who is just plain irresistible.

Livia is on the run from a criminal abusive ex, and Nash came to help run the brewery owned by his father while he recovers from a stroke.  They’re rooming in the old pump house at the back of the brewery. They started out on the wrong foot because Livia called the cops on him, thinking he was her ex coming to force her back. Then to make things worse, when she sees him up close, she realizes he’s the man she met at a bar months ago, almost had a one-night stand with, before changing her mind and running out of the bar!

This sets the tone for this very cute and fun story. Livia is stern and bossy, while Nash is irrepressible with the sexual innuendos, all in good fun. I loved that, after not being able to trust any man, she finally realizes that she can trust Nash, who is resolute to protect her.

There’s a constant menace from Livia’s past, Livia’s constant fear and need to hide, the family interactions on both sides, Nash’s compulsion to protect her, and the sizzling hot chemistry they share. It’s very yummy and entertaining!

Book review: THE UNRAVELING, by Vi Keeland

It begins relatively innocuous, a bitter widow rallying against her dead husband. But then it starts getting weird with all these obsessive tones, goes into twisted territory, and us readers are left scratching our heads.

Meredith went down the rabbit hole in this story of guilt, love/hate towards her husband, attraction towards another man involved in the tragedy, obsession and so many lies I don’t know how she kept them straight.

It gets curiouser and curiouser as it twists some more, and Meredith is so anguished with her feelings, her fear, her guilt. It’s like being inside a tornado, being thrown around.

I felt for her, although at times I also judged her.  Who knows what you feel when you lose your husband under the circumstances she did, no wonder she didn’t know where to turn.

It’s not a thriller but it’s certainly suspenseful, surprising, enthralling like when you’re watching a rattlesnake waiting for the bite.  It’s full of lust and feeling lost, of trying to find your way out of a maelstrom of feelings and compulsions and strive for a normal life. Compelling and brilliantly executed!

Book review: SONGS TO BREAK UP TO, by Julie Kriss

Road Kings #6

Finn & Juliet

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This author has the incredible ability to suck you into the story with just the first lines.  The characters she develops are just so likable and relatable!  And it helps that this book is another installment on the Road King’s series which has been so fantastic.

Finn and Juliet met when they were nineteen, he was a pop star whose career was beginning to tank, she was the misunderstood artist who had problems connecting to her mother and sister.  They had a moment, and when they said goodbye, it felt it would be forever, but with a pang because the attraction was so strong.

Thirteen years later, Juliet’s sister is marrying Finn’s brother, and the rest is epic, romantic and emotional.

Finn is a pop star has-been and Juliet had gone through a similar phase, but was now having a second chance, playing bass with the Road Kings.  Both are a little broken, both are medicine to each other.  Juliet is a snarky, defensive, hobo-style dressed musician.  Finn is a loner, absent from life after several issues.  I love the way they see each other, bring the other back to life, help with each other’s issues, and bring unity to their family.

This was Julie Kriss writing as best as she does, delighting us with these two riveting characters and spending some time with the Road Kings.  I read it in one day, that says it all how enthralling I found it.  One of my 2024 favorites!

Book review: STORM, by Abbi Glines

Georgia Smoke #4

Storm & Briar

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I started this book with a worry and ended with a delight! As a woman who values her independence, I was beginning to be indignant about Storm’s efforts to keep Briar chained and dependent to him. I knew his feelings were genuine, I knew how much he loved her and cared for her, but he was getting a tad toooo much possessive and unhinged. And I understood that Briar loved him but needed her space and independence.

I loved how Storm catered to Briar’s every whim and need. And because Dovie was important to Briar, she was important to Storm too, so she was very well cared for. But he was lying and hurting Briar in the process. I also loved how valiantly Briar tried to keep her independence, while succumbing to her love for Storm.

So I was worried and challenging the author, how she was going to fix this and she was brilliant!  Storm was getting so psycho that I felt Thatcher was sane in comparison!

The story had some irritating parts (Storm’s machinations), funny parts (the Sunday lunch where every male’s crazy was discussed), very steamy parts (numerous). And it was entertaining as heck. In the end, I loved Storm because I now understood: all the Georgia mafia men have some crazy in them!

Book review: CHASING HARLOW, by Jay McLean

Relentless angst in young adults is what I felt as I read this book, and I loved it!  Jace and Harlow come from tragic events, they are broken, but once they find each other, it was as if they came out of the darkness and found the light.

There were parts that made me cry, they were so sad. Other parts were so entertaining, reading about the life on youngsters in a small town where the fun lies in bonfires or pool parties in some classmate. The gossip train of the little town, the cliques in school, the parents who knew your parents and watch out for each other are all present.  Jace was a brilliant baller but distant teammate. Heather was still grieving for her brother, and coming back from some turbulent months. Their friends Sammy, Jeannie, and Jonah are delightful. They all come together slowly into friendship, Jace and Harlow even slower into love.

The author took me through some twists and turns that wrecked my heart and made me cry, but at the end all I can say is, it hurt so good!
