I’ve said it before and it bears repeating, Carly Phillips is my comfort writer. Perfect plot, perfect pace, wonderful character development, every plot line perfectly closed at the end of the story, her books are a joy to read.

I lost count of the Dares, there seem to be hundreds, so I just enjoyed the story and didn’t try to make sense of who was who.  I just read about a runaway bride, the ex-professional football player who rescued her and whisked her away to the Bahamas and enjoyed her honeymoon with her, as just friends.  Dex Sterling was the perfect white knight, taking care of his damsel in distress, perfectly considerate of her hurt betrayed feelings.  

Samantha Dare was the one who got away, when they met for the first time years ago, the one woman who enticed Dex like no other, but her big brother warned him away, and he was a rookie player who needed to be focused on football only.  Now? It’s time to play!

It was a fun and flirty romance, with just a touch of suspense, a touch of angst from the betrayal and complot, and a lot of fun from the hundreds of siblings and cousins and aunts and uncles.  Completely entertaining and heartwarming!

Book review: FRISCO, by Tijan

Never start to read a Tijan story at evening because reading through the night is guaranteed!  Tijan has the ability to pull you onto a story and hold you there riveted until the end, which in my case came at 5 am!

Shane, a.k.a. Ghost, is a fascinating new hardcore book boyfriend. He’s the national VP of the Red Demons, a 1% MC club, which means they are baddies and lawless. Shane has a pretty face, which paired with that hunky body and aura of dangerous, ay yay yay. I love Tijan’s heroes, they are so yummy!

Kali is back in Indiana from New York City, freshly divorced from scum Foley, who was a 1% cheater, as in he started even before they were married. Kali hasn’t yet dealt with the pain of the breakup and she’s got involved with Shane’s MC business, courtesy of her mother, crazy selfish sister, and brother who is a prison inmate.  Let’s just say that she forgot Foley in a New York minute!

The story is intricate, the characters are intricate, and everyone’s motivations in this story are intricate too. As I was reading the story and enjoying it so hard, it felt like I was keeping track of several plot lines, all of which I loved. Mainly, Shane and Kali, who burst in flames pretty much from the get-go. There’s a story with Kali’s best friends and their love interests, her sister who is batshit crazy, MC politics, most intricate and intriguing of all. And let’s not forget the daily calls to Kali’s father and his dancing gents group! 

There were angsty moments, sexy times, with humorous moments interspersed in true and wonderful Tijan fashion, and it all spells wonderful and entertaining as heck. It’s really unfair that after all the weeks of wait and expectation, we get the arc and read it so fast! There is no way I can read one of Tijan’s books slow and savor it, that happens on the second read!

Deliciously decadent!  I saw Owen as a grumpy, very straight-laced guy. It was a complete surprise, beginning the book, to read he has such a dirty sexy time with Eastlin! He was insatiable and untiring, what a romp!  

What he thought was a wonderful one-night stand turns into torture because that beautiful girl is his best friend Jack’s little sister, and also the best candidate possible to take care of his daughter Rory.  Imagine the torture to exist in the same house, the memories of that sexy night, the need to keep a distance, the yearning. It was delicious!

Both Owen and Estlin have issues that keep them from pursuing their feelings.  Past horrid relations have given them an aversion to trust and to be vulnerable. It was beautiful to see how they deal with their issues, because they are perfect for each other, and it feels so right when they are together.  They travel a very thin line between being professional and managing their chemistry, it felt like they were tittering and stumbling, and I was dying to see them give in!

It was a delicious story because of the balance between proper behavior in public and naughty hijinks in private. I loved to see Estlin’s art flourish again, now she has moved on from her ex, loved how Rory flourished now she has a nanny who is dedicated to her care and happiness. And Owen, seeing how his little girl is so happy, opens his heart to the woman who made this happen. There are hiccups, dancing to Taylor Swift while cooking, family banter and insults, incredible support from the gang, and yummy sexy times. All in all, a delight to read!

Book review: IF YOU WANT ME, by Helena Hunting

Hollis & Aurora

I read this book with my heart hurting, but loving the story. These books with the trope brother’s best friend or in this case, father’s best friend involve lying, hiding, and some pain in the end.  The person being lied to, in this case, Aurora’s father, will feel betrayed and hurt.  Hollis and Aurora love each other so much and so hard that they can’t stop getting closer and closer.  But there’s this storm cloud looming on the horizon.  And as a mother, I was feeling Roman’s hurt even before it happens.

The story is brilliant, I loved the hesitation, the guilt, the despair, especially in Hollis, because he fears he will lose a good friend.  Aurora, like a very beloved daughter, had the fear of disappointing her father but she knows he’ll never stop loving her.  So, for Aurora, the pain is less.  And for me, this book is about Hollis, his uncertainty and his despair.  And this is why I don’t like this trope, my heart hurts so bad, although it rejoices when all is well again.

I loved Hollis’ devotion to Aurora, in spite of his insecurities and concern that she’s too young. I loved Aurora’s relation with her father, how she calls him “Dado”, their closeness, how he includes her in everything. Roman’s dedication to his daughter is just plain beautiful.

There’s an awesome friendship between the women close to the team: Tally, Hemi, Rix, Shilpa, Dred, who call themselves the Badass Babe Brigade. I would seriously love to have such a wonderful group of girl friends! 

It’s very steamy, very entertaining, funny in some parts, a lot angsty, and I feel like I know these people. I loved Aurora’s bratty behavior, how she shakes Hollis broody manner, loved loved seeing Rix and Tristan so lovey-dovey as a couple. Can’t wait to see the other guys get their comeuppance, especially old guy Roman!
