Book review: STRAIGHT FIRE, by Abbi Glines

Smoke series #4

Gage & Shiloh

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Five years ago, Gage and Shiloh were having a toxic relation.  Shiloh was an immature teenager who loved to twist Gage around, make him jealous and see him blow up.  Then, fantastic make-up sex.  It was exhilarating until it imploded on them.  She left, he went from psycho to crazy and got sent to the Marines to cool off.  Back in Florida, he joined Blaise Hughes and the family, and now he’s one of Blaise’s most trusted soldiers.  Still crazy, and still hating the memory of Shiloh and the destruction she wrought over him.

Now, Gage is all banged up from a fight, needs a nurse, and who else but Shiloh comes into his sick room to take care of his wounds.  I swear I felt the earth shaking!

Shiloh had a car accident two years ago and has amnesia, so she doesn’t remember Gage or anything that happened between them.  What she did know, is that she didn’t like the life she was living in Boston with her parents and fiancee, so she broke all those strings that were keeping her prisoner and moved to Ocala to work with her uncle Neil, physician to the Southern Mafia lead by the Hughes family.

And this is when a lovely story of second chances and redemption starts to weave a riveting web of old memories for Gage, new memories for Shiloh and the reawakening of the strong bond they used to have, without the toxic element.

Shiloh was lovely, with beautiful thoughts and feelings.  Her connection to Gage was immediate, upon seeing him, and she didn’t understand it but the reader could.  It was her body and soul reacting to her soulmate.  Since she was now mature, she was better equipped to deal with Gage’s crazy and although initially confused, she caught on quickly.  Only she could defuse him when he was like a cocked pistol!

I loved all the crazy stuff with Gage!  Only he could go from sane to unhinged on the twist of a dime, like there’s a beast inside him that wakes up and takes over when one of his triggers is activated.  And Shiloh is his most sensitive trigger.  He was at times boyish in his attachment to Shiloh, seriously addicted and obsessed, and tender when he’s not running super hot and sexy.  Even though he continues to be crazy, this time it’s with a protective purpose, no one touches Shiloh and lives!

I loved Shiloh and Gage, loved how their love grows and matures, and how Shiloh grows to understand and balance Gage.  He’s still explosive but she’s got the control now and he listens to her.  This story could not happen without Gage’s besties Huck and Levi, who help defuse the bomb that is Gage, and Huck’s fiancee Trinity, who feeds the crowd and is so nice to Shiloh.  We get short glimpses of Blaise and Maddy also.  And one little peek of little Hughes, Trev.  Truly a riveting read and a great continuation of this series.  And this little glimpse of Trev makes me anxious for his story! And Levi’s! And Saxon’s!

Book review: KARMA’S KISS, by R.S. Grey

The best part about this book is that it’s a small town romance, and I love this trope.  Everyone knows everyone else’s business, gossip tra...
