Book review: DEAR GRUMPY BOSS, by Julia Wolf

The Harder They Fall #1

Weston & Elise

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read Sincerely, Your Inconvenient Wife and loved it so much that I decided to read this one, the first in the series.  I didn’t get a strong feel for Weston and Elise in the second book so I wanted to get a closer look.  What I got is a workaholic guy who has always been in love with his best friend’s little sister but didn’t dare break the bro code.  And when he did, he didn’t know how to break his workaholic personality!

For Elliot Levy, his sister was the most important person in his world.  When her relation with her boyfriend went south, instead of confronting him, she decided to ghost him.  She called her brother and he made it happen in one day, moving her from Chicago back home to Denver in just one day and a half.  And then proceeded to gaslight him into believing Elise is a phantom of his imagination.

Weston was happy to have Elisa back with them and happy that she was nice with him again.  When he was in high school, they had a happy friends relation, then when he went to college she went Arctic on him, and now that she’s back home, they are friends again.  He doesn’t understand but won’t ask, just enjoy basking in her warmth.  He got her an apartment in his building and a job in his company, but got warned by Elliot that his sister is a “no go” territory.  Then had to watch his little brother Miles befriend her!

I wasn’t very impressed with Weston, seems his feelings run deep but when he confronts a problem with his beloved company Anders, he goes into a hyperfocus and nothing touches him, everything else is shoved aside.  I already knew where this was going!

As expected, Weston tried to respect Elliot’s warnings, but he had always loved Elise.  First as a little sister, then the love changed.  So much so, that when they eat together, she will eat her pickle and he will give her his.  It’s like this little love ceremony that everyone sees and nobody interpreted as his love signal, so cute.  In typical bro code fashion, West and Elise get close and have to hide it from Elliot.  There are work issues, an ex-girlfriend and an ex-boyfriend who need to be sorted and moved strictly into past and forgotten relations.  Elise has a bad habit that instead of confronting, she ghosts people.  She did that to her ex, and I just knew it would come back to bite them.

Miles, Weston’s younger brother, was the surprise in this story.  I loved him in Sincerely, Your Inconvenient Wife, and was so surprised to find him so annoying here.  His story arc is so interesting, ultimately sad and then hopeful, that now I know why I loved him in the second book.  Worth the read!  Saoirse is also a joy to read.  Although a secondary character, she shines with her kindness, warmth, and generosity; a perfect and supportive bestie!

Of all the characters, the one I find most intriguing is Elliot.  Strict, very composed and controlled, and yet it’s very clear how much he loves his sister and will move heaven and earth for her.  His friends Luca and Weston are also important and very much loved.  There’s an anecdote when West got hit by his father and Elliot’s reaction that says everything about him.

I found the love between Weston and Elise funny and warm, very cuddly and sexy.  He’s a bit clueless on how to treat a girlfriend and she needs some pointers on how to keep a boyfriend on the right path, but their group of friends are wonderful and they did their job as counsellors just right.  Fun and entertaining!

Book review: KARMA’S KISS, by R.S. Grey

The best part about this book is that it’s a small town romance, and I love this trope.  Everyone knows everyone else’s business, gossip tra...
